Myth of the disconnected telecommuter debunked

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? The assumption that employees who regularly telecommute will feel less attached to the organization they work for due to feeling isolated and disconnected is a myth, according to a study led by a communication researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM).

The study examined how teleworkers' use of various forms of communication was related to their feelings of closeness to others as well as to feelings of stress from interruptions. The study also tested how these outcomes of communication were associated with teleworkers' sense of identity as part of their organization.

Findings indicated that more communication does not equal more organizational identification for teleworkers. In fact, the opposite was true, says Kathryn Fonner, UWM assistant professor of communication.

"It is often assumed that teleworkers need a lot of communication and contact with the organization in order to diminish their sense of distance and to develop a sense of belonging," says Fonner. "But we found that the more teleworkers communicated with others, the more stressed they felt due to interruptions, and this was negatively associated with their identification with the organization."

The study, co-authored with Michael Roloff, professor of communication studies at Northwestern University, appears in the June issue of Communication Monographs, published by the National Communication Association.

Although feeling a sense of closeness with others during workplace interactions was associated with positive organizational identification, the study found that the negative relationship between stress from interruptions and organizational identification was stronger.

One possible reason, says Fonner, is that teleworkers consider fewer interruptions as being one of the perks of their remote work arrangement. "When teleworkers feel they are constantly interrupted, this may decrease the value of organizational membership for them, and diminish their attachment to the organization," she says.

The study evaluated differences between teleworkers and office workers. Teleworkers regularly worked at least three days a week from a location other than the office, and office workers worked at least three days a week in an office or shared workspace alongside their colleagues. Each set of employees used various modes of communication, including face-to-face, phone or email contact, instant messaging and videoconferencing.

Other outcomes of the study:

? The benefits of frequent communication with others were minimal and not significantly related to teleworkers' or office workers' sense of closeness with others in workplace interactions, regardless of the communication mode used.

? Office workers reported significantly greater levels of stress due to interruptions compared to teleworkers, but their organizational identification was not affected by this stress.

? For teleworkers, stress from interruptions was associated with increased face-to-face communication, email, instant messaging and videoconferencing. For office workers, stress was only related to increased face-to-face and email communication. Results indicate, however, that phone communication generally did not induce the same degree of stress as the other modes.

Fonner says the study findings emphasize a need to address the stress and time pressure associated with the constant barrage of workplace communication for everyone.

"Teleworkers should strategically manage their connectivity in order to balance the benefits and drawbacks of communicating with others," says Fonner, "while organizations should focus on streamlining communication. This may include limiting mass emails, diminishing the number of weekly meetings, creating information stores and fostering an environment where employees can schedule uninterrupted time to work."

Travel Insurance for Seniors? | Travel Tips, Questions And Answers ...

I would like to know what percentage or amount of travel insurance fees collected from Seniors ?Snow Birds? actually is paid out helping them either with medical bills overseas, or returning them home for treatment in Canada. Why can?t a system be set up where Seniors can pay into a fund similar to medicare, so that they may be treated overseas in specific sun destinations, so that all us who worked so hard all our lives don?t have to stay all winter in Canada, in the cold and snow, due to illnesses we all suffer from eventually as we get older. I would pay into such a fund myself, knowing that I am covered without fear of an Insurance refusing to pay medical services required while vacationing away from Canada. Any Ideas out there?
Just to let you know, we do pay for our health care here in Canada, through our income tax system. Most Canadians that do vacation down South do so for a short period of time a week or two at most, some of us do go for longer periods but they are a very small minority, our winters here are cold and long. Where did you find the statistics regarding Seniors travelling?

Partial lunar eclipse kicks off June's sky sights

The first lunar eclipse of the year will occur next week when the full moon passes behind Earth, casting a shadow over a large expanse of the lunar surface.

On June 4, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible to skywatchers in North America, South America, Australia, eastern regions of Asia and across the Pacific Ocean, weather permitting.

Lunar eclipses occur when the moon orbits behind Earth with respect to the sun, and the planet's shadow blocks light from the sun that would otherwise hit the moon. Since only a fraction of the moon will covered in shadow next week, astronomers call this type of eclipse a partial lunar eclipse.

    4. Here's how to win a NASA 'present from space'

For skywatchers in the eastern United States, the eclipse begins before dawn as the moon is setting in the west. The moon will move behind the planet at roughly 6 a.m. EDT (3 a.m. PDT; 1000 GMT). About 37 percent of the moon's surface will be darkened at maximum eclipse, which will take place at approximately 7:04 a.m. EDT (4:04 a.m. PDT; 1104 GMT), according to NASA astronomers.

Observers in the eastern United States will be particularly well-placed to see what is known as the "moon illusion," which is a curious spectacle not fully understood by scientists. In this optical illusion, a low-hanging moon appears larger than normal when it beams through trees, buildings and other foreground objects. [ Best Telescopes for Beginners ]

In reality, low moons are no wider or larger than any other moon, but the human brain strangely sees it that way. The illusion is part of the mind's attempt to make sense of the moon in relation to earthly objects on the horizon.

According to NASA, skywatchers east of Mississippi will be treated to an extra large eclipsed moon, which will appear low in the west at daybreak.

The moon on June 4 will also be a full one. Native American folklore dictates that this full moon is called the Strawberry Moon, because it coincides with the season for harvesting strawberries.

Next week's lunar eclipse is the second in an impressive trio of celestial events.

A spectacular annular solar eclipse, when the moon passed between Earth and the sun to create a so-called "ring of fire" in the sky, wowed skywatchers on May 20. On June 4, the Earth, moon and sun will reverse their order, so that the moon is eclipsed rather than the sun.

To cap off the stunning lineup of sky shows, the transit of Venus will occur on June 5, as Venus moves directly between the Earth and the sun in a rare spectacle that will not be visible again until 2117.

Sales and Marketing: Remember Me?: Yearlong marketing ...

Body_RememberMe.jpgby Robert Lerose.

?

?

Tax professionals are fond of saying that tax planning and preparation should be a year-round concern, not just on April 15.

?

Similarly, a seasonal business that hopes to do well during its peak season needs to find ways to stay uppermost in the minds of its customers and prospects during the inevitable off-peak times.

?

Business owners and marketers are availing themselves of a range of strategies today to do just that?from traditional offline meet-and-greets to pointed online communications.

?

All of these marketing channels have elements in common that boost their effectiveness. Among them: knowing target customers, capturing data about them, and then segmenting it very carefully.

?

"This really helps you focus your marketing efforts," says Caron Beesley, owner of April Marketing, a Virginia-based marketing communications firm.

Different customers, different offers

A prospect who requests information about your product or service for the first time could get one type of marketing message; for example, an invitation to register for your newsletter. On the other hand, you might send a loyal customer a special preseason offer.

?

PQ_RememberMe.jpgMoney-saving incentives have their place, but Beesley cautions against leading with early bird discounts.

?

"You have to be careful that you don't cannibalize your offer," she says. A clear, direct email program with a message such as "Book now for the season" or "Get ahead of the crowd" raises the awareness of customers and preserves the value of your product or service at the same time.?

?

Customers also respond to, and get involved with, email campaigns that offer genuinely valuable, intriguing, or even amusing information sent in the off-season.

?

Jeanne Rossomme, a blogger for SCORE and founder of RoadMap Marketing, her own Washington, DC-based marketing company, recalls a woman who runs an educational camp during the summer, but sends target-specific emails to her customers throughout the year with a math theme.

?

For example, on March 14, she'll send an email devoted to discussing the value of pi (3.14).

?

"It's really just a simple email saying, what are some ways you can celebrate pi with your kids?" Rossomme says. "Or, what are some ways you can get your preschoolers to learn about fractions?" Things like that are applicable to the woman's audience, she explains.?

?

The tactic must work: the woman says that the emails are read by a large number of recipients. Newsletters, case studies, and white papers are other forms of content marketing that succeed.

Get to know the top guns

Another technique Rossomme favors is harnessing the power of social media. This, she explains, can expand your company's presence by identifying and nurturing the top "influencers" in your particular area, such as bloggers or distributors.

?

Then, follow them and try to establish some kind of connection, whether by responding to a blog post or answering a question. In short, make yourself known early as having the information they need, when they need it.

?

"[Once] you have that connection, you can reach out to that person because they already know who you are," Rossomme says. "[Then] they're more willing to advertise or talk about your product."

?

The off-season is also an ideal time to prepare some of your content?such as Facebook posts or articles?and to come up with a schedule for distributing it at the proper time.

?

"You basically have this engine running with everything teed up in advance," Rossomme says. "Your time isn't spent during your crazy busy season writing content. Instead, that's already been done and you're able to respond quickly to any inquiries you get."

Face-to-face selling that pays off

While the Internet may have turned us into a global community where everyone is a potential customer, generating support in your own backyard also keeps your pipeline filled. Grassroots efforts should not be overlooked.

?

When Steve White started a gourmet cheese store in the popular summertime destination of Cape May, New Jersey, he opened his doors at admittedly the worst time of year?the middle of winter. Yet, ironically, it turned out to be beneficial.

?

"Even though that was our slow month, we got familiar with our product, how to sell it, and how to take care of it," says White, co-owner and co-manager of the Seaside Cheese Company with his wife Barbara. "When the summer hit, we had all the kinks worked out."

?

During their off-season, the couple went door-to-door, introducing themselves to the motels, B&Bs, and restaurants in the area. Their low-key, soft sell approach allowed them to work out package deals and spread news about their store by word-of-mouth.

?

Still, they haven't abandoned online marketing altogether. Their Facebook page gets updated a few times a week with cheese facts, upcoming cheese releases, and a new macaroni and cheese dish that they offer every Friday?again, content targeted to their particular audience.

?

Setting up stalls at the regional farmers' market, advertising in the top spot on a local sightseeing map, and adding to their product line to better serve their customers, have also raised their visibility.

?

The efforts are obviously paying off: White says they've enlarged their store twice and received glowing comments on the consumer rating site Yelp. Starting Memorial Day, they will expand their hours of operation year-round.

?

"I know Cape May is a seasonal town, but even if one person walks through the door, they'll know we're open," White says. "You've always got to keep doing different stuff."?

Three Open Source Apps Your Small Business Should Be Using ...

Switching from proprietary to open source applications can do several things for a small business. Compared to their proprietary counterparts, open source apps are often more stable, cheaper, and have a large community that offers support for the small businesses that are utilizing them. Here are three you should be using in your small business.

Mozilla Firefox

I?ve been using this browser since it was called Firebird way back when. I stopped for a bit last year in?favor of Chromium, but I?m back. Tweaking privacy settings is fairly easy; there are a plethora of?plugins available for it; and it?s cross platform.?I can use Firefox in Linux (my usual situation) in?Windows, and on my Android phone. There?s a Mac version too, but the only Mac I use is an iPad that?I get by being on the local school board. Safari is fine for the little browsing I do on that rig.

You can grab it on Mozilla.org?s Firefox page for free. I suggest the Echofon plugin (if you?re on?Twitter) and the Cookie Whitelist plugin. The second one takes a backward approach to cookies.?Rather than blocking the ones you don?t want (which would be quite a list) this plugin allows you to?only accept cookies from sites you DO want. It?s a much easier list to maintain.

Some trouble you might have are vendor websites and online tools that only work in IE. If your vendor?wants to keep your business, then I suggest you get them to make their stuff cross platform. When I?run into such an app or website, I wonder what it?s doing that REQUIRES Internet Explorer and?Windows. Seems like it?s probably making calls to my operating system that might be a security risk.?In addition, these sites and tools also completely useless on the majority of mobile devices. That?s a?sizable chunk of the public to ignore. Do you want to do business with an ignorant vendor?

OpenOffice and LibreOffice

These two apps (I?m counting them as one) are very similar at this point. There was some sort?of disagreement I guess and lots of people who were working on OpenOffice left the team and started?up LibreOffice. I?ve gone with them and use LibreOffice exclusively, mostly because Oracle getting?involved when they bought Sun (who originally started OpenOffice) makes me nervous. Their recent?shenanigans between Oracle and Google over Android and Java code only cements this concern.

But the fact is that either of these apps will open most documents created in Microsoft Office, and will?open them well. Macros will likely cause problems. I hardly ever run into them, and so haven?t had the?pleasure of trying to make them work. Generally, if I run into a spreadsheet that is beginning to require?even too many formulas, I start looking to change things over to some sort of database (MySQL or?PostgreSQL) based application. A browser based database app (one that runs is Firefox, remember?) is?usually best.

One of the handiest features of these office apps is the ?export to pdf? button. One click, and BAM!?Instant pdf file, ready for emailing. Speaking of emailing?

Mozilla Thunderbird

Another app from Mozilla, Thunderbird is a powerful alternative to Outlook, complete with calendar?capabilities if you need them. I successfully hooked it up to a Google calandar (until the school board?gave me the iPad) without a problem. I?ve been using it to check email since it came out, and have all?but one person using it where I work now. My favorite setup is with IMAP servers, since I can see the
same thing on one computer (received AND sent emails) that I can on another.

These three apps will make any small business formidable, and they each cost nothing. Get familiar?with them and you?ll do well.

SEC Baseball Tournament: Kentucky Wildcats (4) @ Mississippi St. Bulldogs (3) - Tournament Semifinal 1 Open Thread

Today at noon (1:00 PM EDT) in Hoover, Alabama, the Kentucky Wildcats take on the Mississippi St. Bulldogs in the first semifinal game of the 2012 SEC Tournament. This is a very big game, because the loser of this one is out, and the winner goes on to meet the winner of the Florida Gators, who ousted then national champ South Carolina Gamecocks yesterday, and the Vanderbilt Commodores, who defeated Florida Thursday but, like UK-MSU, must face the Gators again today.

Related: SEC Game Radio Broadcast

I'll be posting some of the game, but not the early part as I am going out for lunch. When I return, I'll be more or less live-blogging the game by listening to the radio broadcast. For those of you reading from work, you can check in here for updates.

It's very exciting to me to imagine the Wildcats making it all the way to the tournament final and winning the SEC Tournament. The very best thing about this year's team is their youth, and most of the top talent on this roster will be returning for at least two more years. Coach Henderson now has a real chance to build UK into a long-term powerhouse and complete the job that John Cohen started before he left to coach his alma mater, Mississippi St.

California Senate passes bill to ban employers from demanding job seekers? Facebook passwords - Indiatalkies.com

California, May 26: The California State Senate has passed a bill that would ban companies from asking job seekers or workers for their user names and passwords to social networking websites such as Facebook.

The Senate passed ?SB1349? on Friday, which would make it illegal for employers and admissions officers at colleges and universities to ask current or prospective employees and students for passwords of their social media accounts.

The bill sponsor, Senator Leland Yee, pointed out that social media accounts often contain information employers are not allowed to ask for, including a person?s religion.

?Just simply turning over that account to an employer opens up tremendous liability,? the Los Angeles Times quoted Yee, as saying.

The move came a few weeks after the state?s Assembly passed a similar bill.

He thanked teachers, parents and students for having faith in the institution and for their dedication despite the instability in Somalia.

The university has also has small campus in the port town of Bosaasso in nort-east region of Somalia.

    Class AAAA

    DEFENDING CHAMPION Seneca Valley

THE FAVORITE For the second straight season, Norwin (17-0) finished the regular season unbeaten, but the Knights hope the similarities end there, after a quarterfinal loss squashed title hopes in 2011. With six college-bound starters, including ace Nick Cubarney, the talent is certainly there for a lengthy run. Sophomore shortstop J.J. Matijevic, also hit a team-high .510 with 34 RBI and six homers.

THE CONTENDERS After a surprising run to the semifinals last year, Bethel Park isn't shocking anyone this spring - just beating them. The Black Hawks have three pitchers with at least four wins. Seneca Valley brings experience and a reliable ace in Georgetown recruit Matt Smith.

DON'T OVERLOOK There are few, if any, weak links in this bracket. North Allegheny is always tough, Upper St. Clair has pitching, and the Central Catholic-Shaler winner could get to the final. Even Norwin will have a tough quarterfinal matchup.

    PREDICTION Norwin over Bethel Park.

    Class AAA

    DEFENDING CHAMPION Elizabeth Forward

THE FAVORITE Senior catcher Matt Emge and sophomore pitcher Brendan McKay are the biggest names on top-seeded Blackhawk's roster, but the supporting cast is one of the best around, with five other players sporting double-digit RBI totals. Emge, an Ohio State recruit, hits .510, while McKay bats .426 and has a 0.57 ERA.

THE CONTENDERS Mars won 11 of its final 12 games and features a balanced offense, led by pitcher David Bednar, who hits .413 and has seven wins. Hopewell, which was two runs away from a finals appearance last year, defeated Blackhawk earlier this year and has six returning junior starters. Thomas Jefferson ace Greg Schneider has eight wins, a 0.19 ERA and 88 strikeouts, plus he hit .583.

DON'T OVERLOOK Chartiers Valley and South Park gave Thomas Jefferson a good run in Section 3 and are capable of some upsets. Hampton overcame early struggles to win 12 of its last 14.

    PREDICTION Blackhawk over Hopewell.

    Class AA

    DEFENDING CHAMPION Riverside

    THE FAVORITE Ellwood City
(18-2) blew out No. 3 Riverside, 13-3, on Monday to clinch the Section 5-AA title and enters the playoffs on a five-game winning streak, paced by Greg Lynn, who is hitting .556 with 12 RBI.

THE CONTENDERS Shady Side Academy (15-2) is seeded second and is led by pitcher Ben Hartz (4-1). Riverside (15-5), the returning WPIAL and PIAA champion, is led by Ian Sutherland (.464, 18 RBI) and Tyler Falk (21 RBI). South Fayette (13-6) won Section 1 by two games, and Greensburg Central Catholic (12-6), led by catcher Brad Appleby (.522, 24 RBI), was the only WPIAL team to defeat Shady Side Academy. Freeport is led by Ryan Dunn (.568, 22 RBI), the top hitter in AA, and five-win pitcher Robbie Miller.

    DON'T OVERLOOK Fort Cherry
(13-7) was a surprise winner out of Section 2. The Rangers are led by pitcher Tanner Garry, who had seven wins and 79 strikeouts and hit .550 with 16 RBI.

    PREDICTION Ellwood City over Riverside.

    Class A

    DEFENDING CHAMPION Neshannock

THE FAVORITE Neshannock (18-2) is led by Florida State recruit John Sansone, who leads Class A with a .667 average and has 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 33 RBI.

THE CONTENDERS California's T.D. Conway (.608), Matt Bakewell (.600) and Sean Cotton (.511) have combined for 83 RBI. Conway has a WPIAL-high 10 wins. Bentworth (16-1) is led by pitcher Tyler Delval, who has five wins and batted .565 with five home runs, as well as Trevor Wood (.481). OLSH (14-5) pitcher Preston Falascino has recorded six wins. Vincentian (12-5) is led by Evan Gourley (20 RBI), while Joe Killian (.515) paces Springdale (13-6).

DON'T OVERLOOK Defending PIAA champion Serra (12-5) still has pitcher Alain Girman, who has six wins and 77 strikeouts. Girman, a Mt. St. Mary's recruit, also hit .486 with 18 RBI for the Eagles.

    PREDICTION Neshannock over California.

Emotional Fitness: How to create more love in your relationship ...

Posted by The Hand on May 27, 2012 in Relationships |

Some folks exercise daily. Others watch everything they eat and what they put on and in their bodies.

Millions of people do everything they can to be in shape physically, and that?s a good thing. But what about our emotional selves and our relationships? Do we put as much energy and time into those vital parts of our lives? Most people do not. Here are some tips to help boost the emotional energy that will create loving and lasting bonds.

Say ?I love you? at appropriate times. Hearing the words makes a difference to most people. You may think they know, but the truth is that everyone wants the verbal reassurance, provided it doesn?t come from a place of desperation. If you are feeling desperate, you?d best seek some advice on how to rebalance the relationship.

Make plans to do something you love with the person you love. You may not be able to do something every day, but knowing you will have the opportunity soon will give both of you something to look forward to, and that builds your happiness bank account.

If you are holding an old anger toward yourself or someone you love, learn to let go of it. As simple as it sounds, we all know that letting go of anger takes self-discipline, patience and plenty of internal strength. The benefit is that you will rediscover and open a receptive heart that now has room in it for more warmth and affection, rather than rancor.

In new relationships, give yourselves some time to get to know each other. In longer-term relationships, it?s just as important, if not more, to spend time together. Talk about your history (or her story) and let your partner in on some of your past that he or she may not know about. It will bring you closer, guaranteed.

Allow yourself to trust your partner. We all have doubts in certain areas, where we find it difficult to completely trust the other person. It might be concerning money, or the kids, or any number of other issues where trust is missing. The important thing here is to talk about the issue and then make an effort to recover what was lost. Give your partner the opportunity to show you he or she has grown.

Talk, email and text daily. Keeping in close contact throughout the day will make you both feel closer ? and it does wonders for your love life. We all need to know that the one we love thinks of us often. If staying in touch throughout the day is difficult, make sure you connect as often as possible.

By doing this emotional homework, you will give yourself and your relationship the opportunity to get back on a positive track and enjoy the fulfillment it brings. What both of you want from the relationship is usually within reach. Begin with a gentle discussion and then give it your best effort in following through. Remember that a relationship worth having is worth cultivating.

These Gold Coast Restaurants are always packed with energy and people even in the coldest of weathers. Famous restaurant chains as well as restaurants unique to Chicago can be found in this district. Some of the Gold Coast restaurants include the Cheesecake Factory, Johnny Rockets, Dave and Buster?s, Tavern on the Rush, Gibson?s, and Carmine?s. Of course, Gold Coast district wouldn?t be the same without one of the best Gold Coast Restaurants: P.J. Clarke?s. Some of the things you?ll find in the menu of this Chicago restaurant include Homemade Chili, Mini Burgers, Italian Sausage sandwich, Meatloaf, Chicken Pot Pie, and Spaghetti and Meatballs. The portions are big and satisfying and the items are very reasonably priced. And while this can be said for many of the other Gold Coast restaurants, there are a couple of things that sets P.J. Clarke?s apart as one of, if not the best Chicago restaurant.

Many Gold Coast restaurants offer a modern atmosphere with chic designs and lively colors. And while these are perfectly fine, P.J. Clarke?s offers a different kind of atmosphere. Unlike other Gold Coast restaurants, one can feel the history of Chicago within the walls of P.J. Clarke?s. The combination of oak, brass, and old pictures make it a haven for those looking for a cozy atmosphere. The background music takes you back in time. And the friendly staff makes you feel really quite at home. Another thing that sets P.J. Clarke?s apart from many other Gold Coast restaurants is its private party room where you can enjoy any kind of celebration you have in mind. The atmosphere in the room is very relaxing and quite versatile, enabling you to customize the design according to your party?s needs. The Clover room has an antique bar that adds to its charm as well as direct satellite TV and music for those who wish for lively entertainment. The food and drinks can be customized for your party?s needs, whether it?s just a simple business meeting, a cocktail party, or a rock and rolling birthday party. It also has a balcony that provides you a scenic view of the happenings on the street below. And for those who are interested, this Chicago restaurant even has a Murder Mystery Theater Private Dining Package that offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience!

P.J. Clarke?s is a Chicago restaurant that is also a Chicago bar. While there are many Chicago bars in the area that offer lovely drinks and high energy, there is only one where you can find a ?Cheers?-like atmosphere. This Chicago bar has a very friendly wait staff that are always ready to serve you with a smile. The bartenders, unlike in some Chicago bars, are efficient, amiable, and very knowledgeable about their liquor. Aside from great service, this Chicago bar also has a wide variety of alcohol on their menu, both imported and local. The price, like their food, is very reasonable. To top of the ?Cheers?-like atmosphere is the decor. Unlike other Chicago bars that have a more modern design, P.J. Clarke?s is a Chicago bar that brings back the yesteryears. With tunes from the 1960?s like Frank Sinatra playing in the background, surrounded by carved oak and brass railings, one cannot fail to feel nostalgia and homey in such an atmosphere. Many locals come to relax and get together with friends or family while tourists visit to breathe in a bit of history and have some fun. Everyone who comes to this Chicago bar is never disappointed. While tourists may feel that they?d want to try other Chicago bars, many recurring visitors simply stop looking and just head straight to P.J. Clarke?s for a bit of beer and entertainment.

Even with so many Gold Coast restaurants and Chicago bars to choose from, many locals and tourists flock to P.J. Clarke?s on any given time or day. Great food, excellent service, and a homey atmosphere really makes it one of Chicago?s best Gold Coast restaurants out there.

    Indians top Verlander, sweep Tigers

CLEVELAND (AP) - After the final out, closer Chris Perez let out a primal scream and punched the air in celebration.

The Cleveland Indians, overlooked and underappreciated - even by many of their own skeptical fans - had swept three straight from the Detroit Tigers and their high-priced lineup.

Maybe the AL Central will be a race after all.

Unless the Indians run away with it.

Justin Masterson matched Justin Verlander pitch for pitch for first his career win over Detroit, and the first-place Indians did just enough to beat the reigning AL MVP 2-1 Thursday and complete a three-game sweep of the underperforming Tigers.

Shin-Soo Choo homered on the third pitch from Verlander (5-2) as the Indians won for the eighth time in 10 games and opened a six-game lead over third-place Detroit.

"This is huge for the team," said Perez, who saved all three games in the series after putting pressure on himself by ripping Cleveland fans for not supporting their team. "We played good ball these last three games. I said when I made the comments that I was just going to go out and do the job. Luckily, I've been able to come through."

Meanwhile, the Tigers have dropped six of eight, and manager Jim Leyland wasn't around to see the final four innings after being ejected.

Detroit stranded 30 runners in the series and went just 3 of 28 (.107) with runners in scoring position. Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Delmon Young, the Tigers' 3-4-5 hitters, went a combined 0 for 12 with runners at second or third.

"We're not scoring," Leyland said. "We're not swinging. That pretty much sums it up. I don't know what else to tell you. I'd love to have something juicy for you, but I don't."

The Indians faded down the stretch last season, when injuries - and the Tigers - overwhelmed them. Detroit won the final 10 meetings between the clubs, but Cleveland has taken the first three of 18 against their division rivals, giving more legitimacy to another surprising start.

Although they may not be getting much national respect, the Indians have the Tigers' attention and Perez believes others will begin giving Cleveland its due.

"We don't have the star power," Perez said. "You look over there and they've got Cabrera and Fielder and Verlander and Valverde. That doesn't win baseball games. Good teams win baseball games."

Jose Lopez hit an RBI single in the fourth off Verlander, and as they've been doing for weeks, the Indians played solid defense, got timely hits and moved eight games over .500 for the first time this season.

Masterson (2-3) entered 0-4 in seven starts against the Tigers, but the right-hander allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to outduel Masterson. After his starter put two runners on in the seventh, manager Manny Acta headed to the mound to talk to Masterson, who believed his day was over.

"I was like, `Oh, no, please,"' Masterson said.

But Acta just wanted to know if Masterson had the stamina and a sinker to get Cabrera and Fielder.

"I told him, `Let's do this,"' said Masterson, who got Cabrera on a fly to center and the stabbed a hard shot through the middle from Fielder before throwing to first for the final out.

"He's our horse," Acta said of the 6-foot-6 Masterson, who has struggled this season after being Cleveland's most consistent starter in 2011. "He's got to get through that."

Masterson was able to slow down Verlander, who has owned the Indians. He won all three starts against Cleveland last season, and came in 9-1 against them in his previous 12 starts. The right-hander gave up two runs, six hits, walked one threw a 102 mph fastball on his 116th pitch as if to remind the Indians that they'll see him again.

"I wasn't trying to send a message," Verlander said. "I was trying to light a spark. I thought if I could dominate an inning and get our guys back in quick, maybe something would happen."

Frustration has been building for the Tigers, who signed Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million free agent contract in the off-season and were expected to dominate.

"You can only say it's early for so long," Verlander said. "We've got to get it turned around. It's disappointing the way we've been playing. Obviously, we all expected better."

Choo quickly ended any suspense whether Verlander would repeat his flirtation, crushing the right-hander's third pitch into the second deck in right - a 454-foot shot. Choo is batting .350 (14 of 40) in 10 games since moving into the leadoff spot.

NOTES: Verlander has pitched at least six innings in 52 straight starts. It's the longest streak in the majors since Steve Carlton did it for 69 consecutive starts from Sept. 13, 1979 to April 13, 1982. ... Indians RHP Josh Tomlin reported no problems after throwing a 50-pitch simulated game in the bullpen. He's been on the disabled list with a sore wrist since May 12. ... Indians DH Travis Hafner was not in the starting lineup after fouling a ball off his right foot in Wednesday's game. Acta said Hafner's "not OK" before saying he was day-to-day. ...
