Ex-Marine's journey from homelessness to Paralympics

Retired U.S. Marine Angela Madsen once lived out of a locker at Disneyland. But the 52-year-old paraplegic turned her life around and has since rowed across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. She's now competing for Team USA at the Paralympic Games in London.

By Jamieson Lesko, NBC News

LONDON -- Angela Madsen's journey to the London 2012 Paralympics is nothing short of extraordinary.

Complications following a back injury she sustained while serving in Marine Corps at the age of 20 led to her becoming a paraplegic when she was in her 30s.

Bound to a wheelchair, she fell into a deep depression. She lost her job. Her marriage dissolved.

"I lost my house ... I ended up homeless, kept my things in a locker at Disneyland. Happiest place on earth, right?" she told NBC News at the USA track-and-field training camp at RAF Lakenheath, near Cambridge, England, last week.

But the native Californian missed surfing, so she set out to find a way back to the water, determined to turn her life around.

Some of the hottest tickets at the London Paralympics are for wheelchair rugby. The sport is so violent and fierce, that it has been dubbed "Murderball."

"I started taking responsibility ? and started making the changes and decisions to move positively forward in my life,? she said.

Now, her definition of a disabled person is "somebody who doesn't believe they can and doesn't try.?

'Meet the Superhumans': Paralympians burst onto world stage

She competed in the 2006 world surfing championships and then fell in love with rowing.

She turned this hobby into history by rowing across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Ahead of the London Paralympics, L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham spent a day learning blind soccer from Team Great Britain.

"I didn't row across my first ocean until I was 47,? she said with a laugh.

"I have six Guinness World Records for rowing oceans. I've circumnavigated Great Britain ... I've been places on this planet that no human being has ever been before. A thousand miles from land in any direction ... it's been a pretty amazing life."

Read Angela Madsen's profile at the Paralympic Games' website

Next year, she plans to row solo across the Pacific Ocean.

Madsen rowed for Team USA in the Beijing Paralympic Games, narrowly missing the podium. "I missed the medal rounds by 7-hundredths of a second.?

Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed during a parachute jump with the 82nd Airborne in November 2003, will compete in the javelin at the London Paralympics.

In the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the 52-year-old is trying her hand at track and field events, competing in the women's shot put and javelin.

"I don?t have any regrets about anything. If I could go back and change anything I wouldn't, except for the amount of pain I have with the rods in my back,? Madsen said. ?That could definitely go. But I can?t foresee change in anything. I'm very, very satisfied with the life that I have now."

How to Prevent Your Customers From Getting Lost...

Author: Tanya Beaudoin ? | ? August 29th, 2012

Imagine if instead of a front door to your business you had a ? ?labyrinth. That?s what it felt like when I tried to access my bank online.

Are you doing the same with your website? How to Maximize Your Website's Web DesignRecently I needed to find nearby locations of a bank branch, which shall remain nameless to protect the guilty! When I visited their website I scanned the page looking for ?Locations? or ?Branches? but I couldn?t find what I needed.

Eventually, I did find the information but it took a lot of searching and it soured my relationship with the bank. The bank website was very difficult to navigate and if I could have chosen another bank, I surely would have.

Having poor website navigation is the same as having a labyrinth at the entrance of your business. When you do this, your customers get lost before they even find your products and services!

I know it can be fun to come up with clever names for your website navigation, but what makes sense as navigation to you may not make sense to everyone. It?s better to keep your navigation concise and purposeful.

Usability expert, Stephen Krug, says it best in the title of his book ? ?Don?t Make Me Think!? Keep things simple and obvious. Your website visitors shouldn?t need a decoder ring to decipher your website to find the products, services or information they are after.

One of the most measurable symptoms of poor navigation and content structure is high bounce rates. That means your website visitors leave your site quickly because they cannot find what they came looking for.

Clear, user friendly, navigation is critical to your website success.

Hiring a professional to help you design your website is the best way to ensure your website navigation is user friendly. When designers talk about navigation, they not only mean the actual names of your links, but the way your website content is structured and grouped together.

While there are no ?official? protocols on website navigation, a professional web designer will understand the unwritten rules on navigation naming conventions, content structure and navigation positioning. An effective navigation will improve customer satisfaction and your bottom line?

Are you ready to remove the road blocks preventing your customers from buying from you?

6 Tips for Effective Marketing Emails | Local Business Marketing Tips

None of us are short of emails to read. So when you?re a marketer sending your own email what can you do to improve the chances that your email is opened, read and some nice people actually take the action you want?

1. The ?From? Field
The first thing we look at when receiving an email is the name of the sender. Do we know this person? We are way more likely to open an email that is from a person or company that we know. Personal is also better than corporate so use your own name where you can. If your recipients are not likely to know you personally try making the ?from? name a combination of your name and your company?s name. Your goal here is to simply to have your email opened.

2. Subject Line
The second thing we look at after the sender?s name is the subject line of the email. Your goal with the subject line is the same as with the ?from? field: simply to get your email opened. The research on subject lines varies (source: Smart Insights) but most comes out on the side of short subject lines with non-salesy language. Try to come up with a subject line that you would use in a ?regular? non-marketing email and you will be probably be on the right lines.

3. Email length
OK so say you?ve got someone to actually open your email. The first thing we do once we see the body of an email, is take a quick scan its length. If it looks too long, we?re likely to think ?this is too much work for now? and either delete the email right away or put it in our ?get back to this later pile? (aka we?ll never look at it again!)

So if you want your email read, keep it short. Break the text up into short paragraphs. Put the bulk of the information you need to convey on a landing page on your website so it does not have to go in the email. Use links generously in the email to drive the reader to your landing page ? research shows more links drive more click-throughs (source: Hubspot).

4. Images
As many as 66% of email recipients have images turned off by default (source: MarketingSherpa). This means the majority of people will not see your beautiful images unless they hit a button on their email client to ?download images?.

Consider what your email will look like without images. We?ve seen emails that are one big image and will simply be a big empty space when images are blocked. In this case your message is completely lost totwo-thirds of the people you send to! Check that your critical information and calls-to-action work even when the images are not there. Consider using ?alt text? for your images so at least some text comes up even when your images don?t make it through.

Finally, consider that ?normal? emails from our friends and our boss (the ones we always open and read) don?t have tons of images in them. Don?t get carried away using too many images. There is some evidence that images can help (source: Hubspot) but don?t overdo it so your email looks like glitzy marketing. If so, we reach for the ?delete? button quickly.

5. Calls-To-Action
Make sure your calls-to-action are be clear, concise and noticeable. ?If you want this, click here to buy this.? Using a hyperlink to take readers directly to your landing page. You can include calls to action as graphical buttons in the email to stand out but make sure you have some text links also in case images are off.

6. Test
Test before you send. The way an email looks is actually very dependent on the email client receiving it. An email may look quite different on your corporate Outlook than it may look on your personal Yahoo or Gmail account. Send the email to yourself or some colleagues on a range of different systems and review what it looks like, you may be surprised. If you care about how it looks on mobile devices (you probably should) make sure to take a look at it on your iPhone or Android (or even Blackberry ? they are still out there!)

There are many nuances to sending successful marketing emails. Above all, watch your resulting reports and test different approaches. The great news is that nearly everything in email marketing is measurable and you can continually test and improve what you are doing. We hope these tips start you in the right direction.

The Binding Of Isaac Is Coming To Consoles - News - Game Informer

The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen confirmed on his official Formspring blog recently that the game is being remade for consoles.

The remade console version will include the Wrath of Lamb expansion and will feature new modes, bosses, items, playable characters, co-op and other additions that could not be included in the Flash version of the game.

This is good news for console gamers who are holding out on the title. We reviewed the PC version back in October of last year, and we liked it quite a bit.

Video: Remembering astronaut Neil Armstrong

>>> president obama today ordered flags at half staff for the burial of neil armstrong who may have been the last truly modest hero our nation ever produced. much of the coverage of his life has dealt for good reason with his footstop and his footprint on the moon but those who read more about him about find an astonishing american journey. by the time he was 22 he was already a decorated naval aviator , a veteran of 78 combat missions over korea, he was later a test pilot, he flew in the experimental x-15 seven different times, topping out at 200,000 feet and flying along the likes of chuck quyeager. there was never a neil skrarm strong action figure or chain of restaurants with his name. he did it for the team and quietly walked away. he lived long enough to see the end of our space program and that upset him greatly but also lived long enough to see the great pictures coming back from the mars rover where they talked about neil armstrong today at mission control . he was all about courage, the quiet kind. he was a patriot of the highest order and thankfully right when america needed just the right man for that job, there he was. neil armstrong was 82 years old. he'll be buried in ohio on friday.

Non-Profit and Tax-exempt: What's In a Name? | Musical America ...

By Robyn Guilliams

What is the difference between a ?non-profit? organization and a ?tax-exempt? organization?? I hear these terms used interchangeably ? do they mean the same thing?

Great question!? These terms do not mean the same thing.? All tax-exempt organizations are non-profits; however, not all non-profits are tax exempt.

When an organization wishes to be classified as ?non-profit?, it must register with a state ? usually the state in which it operates.? Every state has different classifications for non-profit organizations.? For instance, New York and some other states have a type of business classified as a ?Not-For-Profit Corporation.?? Other states have corporations that are classified as ?Non Stock Corporations.?? What all of these corporations have in common is that they do not have any owner, and the business of the organization is run by a board of directors.

Once an organization formally registers as a non-profit company with the state, the organization can request federal tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.? If granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, an organization will not have to pay federal taxes on its income (provided that income is related to the organization?s ?charitable mission?), and donations made to the organization generally will be tax deductible for the donor.

States often have additional requirements for organizations to qualify for tax-exempt status.? Some states will grant tax-exempt status automatically to organizations that have been granted federal tax-exempt status, while others require the organization to complete a separate request.

Some businesses elect to become non-profits without also being tax exempt. They do so for many strategic, marketing, and organizational reasons. However, the important take-away here is that not all non-profits are tax exempt. A tax exempt non-profit is subject to far greater government oversight and operational restrictions than a regular non-profit. Unless a non-profit organization is granted tax exempt status by the IRS, that organization is subject to the same tax and filing obligations as any other business!

Mirrors completed for successor to Hubble telescope

Send-off ceremonies held here at Ball Aerospace on Aug. 15 saluted the completion of 18 beryllium primary mirror segments for the?James Webb Space Telescope?(JWST), which is billed as the successor to NASA's venerable Hubble Space Telescope. Ball is also responsible for JWST?s secondary and tertiary mirrors, a fine steering mirror assembly and several engineering development units.

Ball is the principal subcontractor to manufacturer Northrop Grumman for the JWST optical technology and lightweight mirror system at the heart of the?telescope?? an astronomical project that is now pegged to cost roughly $8.7 billion and to be lofted in the fall of 2018.

Success story

The JWST mirror system includes 18 gold-coated, ultrasmooth, 4.2-foot (1.3 meters) hexagonal mirror segments that comprise the 21.3-foot (6.5 m) primary mirror. When launched, it will be the largest mirror ever flown in space. [Photos: Building the James Webb Space Telescope]

Down on the floor where the packaged mirrors are ready for shipping to NASA, labels such as "do not stack?this side up" and "critical space flight hardware" are visible.

A folding scheme allows the primary mirror segments to fit atop Europe?s?Ariane 5 launcher?for their eventual unfolding in space. Aligning the mirror segments and adjusting the primary mirror?s curvature will occur over approximately two months.

It has taken about eight years to complete the fabrication of the mirrors, said Paul Lightsey, a Ball mission systems engineer for the optical system on JWST.

"We actually have a real nice success story," Lightsey told SPACE.com. "We?ve been able to show how long it took to polish the first mirror, then each successive mirror. By the time we got up to the later mirrors, we were taking half the time than it took for the first mirror."

Working together as one mirror, those 18 beryllium mirror segments are adjusted by computer-controlled actuators. They adjust each of the mirror segments to correct any errors and are key to giving JWST the power to produce high-quality, sharp images.

"One of the difficulties in making mirrors is to make the curvature exactly what you want," Lightsey said. JWST's mirrors can be pushed and pulled a little to get the curvature right, as well as moved up, down and sideways, he said.

Lifetime at L2

Allison Barto, JWST program manager at Ball Aerospace, said the beryllium mirrors couldn?t be too heavy.

"We had to take out over 90 percent of the material in the back of the mirrors to make them light enough to launch 18 of them into space," she said.

Since?JWST is an infrared telescope, the mirrors and actuators must function at temperatures as low as minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 240 degrees Celsius).

Lightsey said the JWST project is set to be a five-year mission, but has a goal of 10 years beyond commissioning. Outfitted with a five-layer sunshield, JWST will operate at supercold temperatures at a spot about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth known as?Lagrange Point?2, or L2.

Dee Snider to Paul Ryan: Stop playing my song

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider has asked Republican vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan's camp not to play his hit song, "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Ryan spokesman Brandon Buck wrote a pithy email in response: "We're Not Gonna Play It anymore."

Snider says in a statement that he does not support Ryan and denounced use of the song, an anthemic 1984 hit for the glam metal band.

It joins a long list of songs that musicians have asked politicians to stop using. Most recently, the rock band Silversun Pickups asked likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney to stop using the song "Panic Switch" last week. The campaign said the song's use was inadvertent.

Stem Cell Trial for Autism Launches in U.S.

Stem cell treatment could lower inflammation levels and demonstrate whether autism is an autoimmune disease

artist rendition of a child's brain Image: Nature News

By Kathleen Raven of Nature magazine

Families with autistic children must navigate a condition where questions outnumber the answers, and therapies remain sparse and largely ineffective. A clinical trial being conducted by the Sutter Neuroscience Institute in Sacramento, California to address this situation began recruiting participants today for a highly experimental stem cell therapy for autism. The institute plans to find 30 autistic children between ages 2 and 7 with cord blood banked at the privately-run Cord Blood Registry, located about 100 miles west of the institute. Already one other clinical trial, with 37 total participants between ages 3 and 12 years old, has been completed in China. The researchers affiliated with Beike Biotechnology in Shenzhen, the firm that sponsored the study, have not yet published any papers from that the trial, which used stem cells from donated cord blood. Mexican researchers are currently recruiting kids for yet another type of autism stem cell trial that will harvest cells from the participant?s fat tissue.

But for each of these officially registered trials, many more undocumented stem cell therapy treatments take place for clients who are willing to pay enough. ?Our research is important because many people are going to foreign countries and spending a lot of money on therapy that may not be valid,? says Michael Chez, a pediatric neurologist and lead investigator of the study at Sutter.

A major difference between the Sutter trial and those in China is that his will use the child?s own stem cells, rather than those from a donor. Chez hypothesizes that one way autologous stem cell infusion might work is by reducing inflammation within the body?s immune system. This would answer previous research that suggests that autism may be an autoimmune disease. ?One of our exploratory goals will be to look at inflammatory markers in cells,? he says.

The study?s primary goal, however, will be assessing changes in patients? speaking and understanding of vocabulary.?For each individual, researchers will create a baseline benchmark that establishes current skill levels. The group will be evenly divided, with one initially receiving an infusion of their own, unmodified cord blood stem cells and the other a placebo treatment of saline injection. Six months later, all of the children will be tested on their ability to comprehend and form words. The groups will then be switched. In the course of the 13-month-long study, both groups will receive only one stem cell therapy infusion.

Not all stem cell scientists who study neurodevelopmental diseases are ready to invest great hope that the autism stem cell trial will succeed. ?I wish I could tell you I?m optimistic about the end results,? says James Carroll, a pediatric neurologist at the Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta who began a clinical trial two years ago to better understand how stem cell therapy affects patients with cerebral palsy. ?But so far we have not seen any kind of miraculous recovery in our cerebral palsy patients. I would be delighted if that changes.?

Members in the stem cell therapy patient community think Chez will have no shortage of volunteers for the trial. Jeremy Lowey, who lives in Sacramento and has struggled with a rare condition known as non-verbal learning disorder, arranged for his own stem cell therapy treatment in India last year, which he called life-changing. He receives numerous Facebook requests from parents of autistic children who are curious to know more. He always begins his conversations by saying, ?Go slowly and think hard about your decision.?

***There's a quiz at the end of this post :)?? ?Here is one of my all-time favorite ways to save time and energy in the kitchen: using crock pot liners?or roasting bags in my crock pot.

I tell you what, I do not like to wash dishes, especial large pots or pans or crock pots that require a lot of scrubbing. Ick! And ouch! It hurts my fingers and hands to scrub. So, I use liners for my crock pot and there is nothing to scrub. Did you know that using a crock pot will save energy too? Yes it?s one of the most economical ways to cook. And who doesn?t like coming home to the aroma of a delicious meal at the end of the day.

I have seen several blogs that are now posting about making your own freezer crock pot meals.?Making my own freezer?crock pot meal?is something I would have to do because I can?t really eat anything that has been processed at all. Something I have wanted to try for a while is preparing several crock pot meals and freezing them in a crock pot liner that is then placed in a Ziploc bag, so all I would have to do it take it from the freezer and Ziploc and place it in the crock pot. I don?t know why I haven?t tried that yet. It seems like it would be a good idea. I suppose you would have to make sure the meal would fit into the crock pot in its frozen state so I would need to be careful about the size and shape it froze in to.

At clean up time, all I would need to do is remove the liner and I would be done! Woo hoo! I have used oven roasting bags in my crock pot too. I closed it up with the raw food inside just as if I was putting it in the oven but put it in my crock pot instead.??

Once, I cooked a pork roast in the crock pot?using a roasting bag, closed?it up according to the directions,?and used a meat thermometer positioned so I could read it through the closed bag and crock pot lid. ?I have found that Wal-Mart is about the cheapest place to buy them at less than half of what my favorite grocery charges. With a coupon you would only be spending pennies per use. You will save more money because you won?t be getting take out with a meal waiting for you at home.
Wow that sounded like a commercial and it was not; I did not receive any sort of compensation for writing this.? I only hope it helps you out in the kitchen as much as it has me. Have you ever used a crock pot liner to freeze a meal in then placed it still frozen in the crock pot? How did it turn out? ***Quiz.....did you notice that I used the words...'crock pot' a lot? I surely did! Can you count how many times? The answer will follow in the comments here on Friday. Just having some fun!

(AP) ? LL Cool J plays a special agent on TV's "NCIS: Los Angeles," and now he's caught an actual bad guy.

The 44-year-old rapper struggled with and subdued a suspected burglar early Wednesday morning at his home in the Studio City area, police said. He was not hurt.

Police got a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. from someone who said her father had spotted an intruder in their home and was holding him downstairs.

"There was a prowler at his residence whom he confronted in the kitchen. ... There was a physical confrontation briefly between the two of them," LAPD spokesman Richard French said.

A 58-year-old man was taken to the hospital and was expected to be arrested on suspicion of burglary. His identity wasn't released but there was no indication that he knew LL Cool J or had a personal vendetta, French said.

"He appeared to be a homeless person," French said.

Early police information said the man received minor bruises. However, the Los Angeles Times (lat.ms/OS63xL) cited police sources it did not identify as saying the suspect received a broken nose and jaw in a "knock-down, drag-out" fight.

French said he had no details about the man's injuries or how he may have gotten into the home, a walled and gated mansion in a wealthy hillside section of the San Fernando Valley that's not far from major studios.

"LL Cool J, and his family, are safe and thank everyone for their thoughts and concern," said a statement released by his publicist, Rhett Usry. "As a father, husband and citizen, he is committed to keeping his family safe and is cooperating with authorities on this private matter."

LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith, has had such hits such as "Mama Said Knock You Out" and "I'm Bad."

'Eye bath' to thank for quantum vision in birds

Move over, Schr?dinger's cat? ? birds may be the true quantum animals.

The bath of cells in avian eyes could prolong a delicate quantum state that helps to explain how some birds navigate using Earth's magnetic field.

It is thought that light reacts with receptors in the birds' eyes to produce two molecules with unpaired electrons, whose spins are linked by a special state called quantum entanglement.

If the relative alignment of the spins is affected by Earth's magnetic field, the electron pair can cause chemical changes that the bird can sense.

In 2009, researchers at the University of Oxford calculated that such entanglement must last for at least 100 microseconds for the internal compass to work. But how the sensitive state of quantum entanglement could survive that long in the eye was a mystery.

Calculations by Zachary Walters of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden, Germany, now show that interactions with cells in the bird's eye allow the electron pairs to stay entangled for longer through a dampening effect.

Rather like the way a car with stiff shock absorbers takes longer to stop bouncing after going over a bump, the signal from the electron pair dies away more slowly under strong interactions with the cellular bath.

Predicting exactly how long entanglement is sustained won't be possible until the mechanism is better understood, says Walters. But he believes there's a good chance his model could account for the 100 microseconds.

Erik Gauger part of the Oxford team, is intrigued by the findings. "It seems possible that this might be the mechanism allowing for the persistence of quantum coherence," he says. "But it is probably too early to say for sure."

Professional Indemnity Insurance ? What Makes it Beneficial for ...

Any business that offers professional services or gives advice should consider taking professional indemnity insurance (PII). Any faulty advice or service provided can make the business legally liable to the claims made by the client/sufferer. In such cases, professional indemnity insurance helps the business handle all the legal costs that arise from the claims made by the clients.

Some of the professions which need to take professional indemnity insurance are ? medical professionals, building/maintenance contractors, financial consultants, advertising and PR agencies, designers, etc. For some of the professionals, professional indemnity insurance is made mandatory by UK government so as to get their professional authorization. They include accountants, architects, solicitors, mortgage intermediaries, insurance brokers and financial advisers.

The insurance protects the professional business against liability coming up apparently due to negligence, error or omission, loss of data or information, violation of confidentiality, employees dishonesty, etc., which may affect the business?s reputation and financial stability badly.

Benefits of taking this policy

Saves from financial losses during lawsuits
Lawsuits sometimes can lead into thousands of dollars, which can be a huge burden for you. Sometimes, you will have to bear the expenses of litigation as well the indemnity to be paid to the client. Why Fatherhood Matters. : ThyBlackMan.com

?Wayne, that boy sho need you.?? Those words were etched into my spirit by my late father, Charley C. Croomes, Sr. over twenty years ago, speaking of my oldest son, now in his twenties.? ?I know, dad. I know? was the only conviction I could whisper in response back then.? In a way, my dad was saying my son?s eyes were fastened upon me. He was watching my every move. Ultimately, those words would form a chorus in my head and change the way I thought about fatherhood.

?

Charley C. Croomes, Sr. had known what it was like to need his father.? He was a former military man with an intimidating presence and had grown up in poverty in rural Oklahoma after his dad, my grandfather, abandoned his family when my dad was a boy.? My dad and mom divorced when I was a toddler and he was given custody of my two older brothers and me and eventually he settled us in Phoenix, Arizona.? I remember my dad as a hard-working man and fiercely protective of his family.? He was fond of telling my two brothers and me about how life was tough for him coming up; it was his way of reminding us of our greater burden of success.

?

Over time, my mom and dad reconciled and remarried. It helped that my father, after years of struggling with alcohol, discovered Christianity and gave his life to Christ.??? I began to see him in a different way.? He overcame an addiction and got his life together.

?

?

He was there because he knew we needed him.? Sometimes God gives us a second chance to do something better.

?

I became a father for the first time in 1985, amidst an era of great personal idealism and ambition. I arrived at that momentous intersection of fatherhood early and immature.

?

About a year and a half after the birth of my first son, an opportunity arose for me to study at a prestigious college in Texas.? I went for it.? I was guided by a belief that I was going to make myself a better man, but there had not formed a connection to being a better father.? My son would visit me during summer and spring breaks and I would fly home to visit as often as I could.??

?

I became a father for the second time in 2007, after a promising relationship with his mother came to an abrupt end. By then my idealism about the world and my place in it had reached its apex.

?

If you are an active presence in the life of your child or children, I salute you and encourage you to keep the faith. Keep it up!? If you are not, my purpose is not to berate you nor condemn you.? Rather, my goal is to share lessons from my own experience and leave you some kernels of advice in hopes that you experience the greatest joy as a father.?

?

Regardless of the relationship context, fatherhood is one of the greatest joys that life can offer. Fatherhood is a tool, an art and a science that was divinely designed to bring purpose to the life of a child.

?

My Lessons

?

As the father of two sons, born of two different eras in my life and birthed from two very different generations, what steels my resolve now is the unfinished business of fatherhood I began over two decades ago. I am now using that experience to become a better father today.?

?

I am writing to you because I have been inspired by the divergent paths to fatherhood my life has taken.

?

Of the many lessons from my journey, this one kernel sticks with me as I remember it from my father: fatherhood is sacrificial. I have learned this the tough way.? The important thing is I have learned it.? And if you haven?t, then do your best to understand what it really means.???

?

I want to speak especially to those who are unmarried fathers and who have been separated from their child or children due to issues with the mother, and whose parental relationship may or may not be under court supervision.? In many ways, the struggle of unmarried fathers is to remain relevant to their children. You make the ultimate sacrifice the moment you decide that you are going to be a part of your child?s life ? regardless of the cost! Fatherhood does not always play out in an Ozzie and Harriet context.

?

Recall that my mom and dad divorced when I was a toddler.? They would later reconcile their differences and remarry by the time I turned twelve.?

?

Unfortunately, the same can not be said for a lot of couples ? things do not always work out.

?

As a father dealing with this scenario, I have learned this: ?whatever the context, it is imperative that you do not fret (Psalms 37) and that you stay focused on and faithful to your child.? Too many fathers hide in the shadows of their children?s lives because of the inherently bitter dealings with their child?s mother. Unfortunately, there are women who use children as weapons against the fathers due to unresolved feelings, anger over a break-up and many other issues.? This is the bottom line: tough times don?t last, tough fathers do!?

?

Fatherhood is still evolving for me.? I am striving to become a role model for both of my sons. I understand acutely the two lives that I have shaped and am shaping.??? My father?s voice has now become a source of inspiration, as opposed to trepidation.? Often I look toward heaven and say ?thanks, pops!?

?

I have two beautiful and intelligent sons, one an up and coming music industry entrepreneur, the other moving swiftly and brilliantly through his toddler years.? They both have taught me invaluable lessons about commitment and responsibility.? Indeed they have made me a better man and a better father.

?
