African leaders call for U.N. mandate for Mali mission

YAMOUSSOUKRO (Reuters) - West African leaders on Thursday called for a regional military operation against al Qaeda-linked rebels in north Mali to be transformed into a U.N. peacekeeping mission as quickly as possible to secure desperately needed funding.

France sent troops into its former colony last month to drive out Islamist fighters, claiming their seizure of Mali's north last year posed a threat to international security.

Paris hopes that from March it can start withdrawing its 4,000 troops but is awaiting the effective deployment of an African force (AFISMA), plagued by logistical and financing setbacks.

Meeting in Ivory Coast's capital Yamoussoukro, presidents from West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS backed calls from France, the United States and Mali itself for the mission to receive a U.N. peacekeeping mandate.

"This shouldn't distract from ongoing operations on the ground," ECOWAS commission president Kadre Desire Ouedraogo told Reuters.

"It's simply an indication that, once peace has returned, we need the support of the United Nations system both for logistical and financial support."

Some two thirds of the 8,000 troops of the African-led mission (AFISMA) have deployed to Mali.

Many still lack the capacity to carry out combat operations and remain in southern Mali, leaving French forces and around 2,000 troops from Chad to secure northern towns and hunt down Islamist fighters hiding in desert and mountain redoubts.

After struggling for months to secure funding for its deployment, international donors pledged over $455 million for Mali at a meeting in Addis Ababa last month.

With the number of troops more than doubling since deployment plans were first hashed out last year, ECOWAS projects the cost of the mission at nearly $1 billion this year.

Transformation to a peacekeeping mission would ensure funding from the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations and facilitate the deployment of air assets essential for moving troops in Mali's vast northern desert.

However, a decision by the U.N. Security Council remains weeks, if not months, away. France's U.N. envoy said on Wednesday that the Security Council would ask Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to report by end-March on the possibility of creating a peacekeeping force.

Despite the rapid French advance which has seen the Islamists' former urban strongholds rapidly retaken, security on the ground in Mali remains tenuous, amid a mounting wave of guerilla raids on towns and suicide attacks.

French and Chadian forces are currently hunting die-hard Islamists holed up in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains. Algerian television reported on Thursday that French troops there had killed Abdelhamid Abou Zeid, a leading al Qaeda field commander.

Houses are still build the same way they were 100 years ago

February 27, 2013

EDMONTON, AB, Feb. 27, 2013/ Troy Media/ ? According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), an estimated 8,000 lbs. of waste is generated with the construction of a 2,000 square foot house.

The majority of that waste comes mostly from the on-site building process and consists of wood, cardboard and drywall. Klaas Rodenburg, CEO of Alberta Centre of Excellence for Building Information Modeling (aceBIM), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to introducing the benefits of BIM into industry, notes: ?Framers, for example, will take the first 2 x 4 that they see and cut it to fit their specifications. They then discard the unused piece of 2 x 4 and grab a fresh piece and repeat the process. At the end of a job, the site is littered with a large stack of discarded and unusable pieces of framing materials and drywall.?

But that is about to change.

While home builders are using modern materials, new design methods, and state-of-the-art technology, the actual building of the house has not changed much over the last 100 years. They are still built one brick or piece of wood at a time. The technology being ?used is used mainly in design aspects of the construction industry and very little elsewhere, but that may be changing.

A technology that can be used by the housing industry is called lean manufacturing. Professor Lauri Koskela, a leader in lean manufacturing theory, says this process helps ?design production systems to minimize waste of materials, time, and effort in order to generate the maximum possible amount of value?.

Building Information Modeling (BIM), is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility which can transform the housing industry into a lean manufacturing force.

BIM allows companies to utilize the waste created during the building process. All waste material is added to the digital knowledge base ? or BIM system ? and can then be re-routed to another project for use. The wood and drywall can even be cut to specification in a factory in advance and assembled at the site in only a few days. This cuts waste significantly in both energy consumption and overall wasted materials.

To go a step further, many lumber yards and contracting facilities have lumber and other expensive housing components lying around for extended periods, waiting to be used. During this time, materials can be damaged or ruined. BIM acts as an inventory control system to ensure material is used in a timely manner.

Duplication is another issue that plagues the housing industry. According to Rodenberg, ?There are people out there (who are) saying we can reduce the cost of buildings by 50 per cent by not duplicating things and doing things over and over again. Especially when you start looking at energy, how much does a bad decision cost you over 30 years??

A company using a BIM system based on lean manufacturing theory will only have materials on hand for upcoming projects. They know when they will need certain components and when to order them. The process of materials distribution and management is much more contained in a BIM system.

Landmark Group of Builders in Alberta, Canada, is one building company using BIM principles and lean manufacturing to tackle these issues head on. It is using analytics to transition traditional building design methods to a virtual level: two-dimensional drawings are turned into a three dimensional world. With the current advances in analytics and software, companies now have the ability to add intelligence to the building process. BIM analytics know almost every aspect of the building inside and out, before it is built. BIM can even tell you where pipes are located and how much water will be flowing through them.

Scenarios can even be designed to test how a building will withstand earthquakes or being moved to another part of the world with a different climate. You can also monitor how minor changes in design ? such as adding solar panels or sun-shades to certain parts of the building ? will effect energy consumption.

Analyzing all the variations of the data provides companies, like Landmark Group, the ability to create sustainable and efficient homes of exceptional quality. But, not only will the homes be efficient, they can be built in a fraction of the time that a conventional builder takes.

But it doesn?t end there. .

In 1993, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency did a study called Building Performance after Hurricane Andrew. The study found that panel-built and modular homes and BIM-style homes that had portions built in factories weathered the hurricane far better and outperformed their conventional counterparts.

FEMA stated that the reason for the difference came down to quality of workmanship. Both Modular and BIM-style factory manufactured parts had an inherently more rigid system that performed significantly better than conventionally framed homes. FEMA was surprised to find that even rafters remained intact because of the rigid design structures.

The BIM model provides homes that are sustainable and of higher quality standards than traditionally built homes. BIM has created a truly industry changing process. However, the adoption of this process by the industry is slow to occur.

Urban baby blog: My toddler wants a tattoo

My two year old daughter likes to ask me if she can get a tattoo. Obviously I?m not going to take her to get one, but she asks me every day anyway.

What the heck kind of toddler wants a tattoo? Children want to imitate their parents. Adi wants to imitate me. I have tattoos. A couple of them are rather large. ?One of my larger tattoos is a peacock on my right arm that goes from my shoulder to my elbow. Adi will talk to it sometimes. She?ll name all of the different parts of the bird (beak, eyes, feathers, etc), and if she sees a peacock at the zoo she?ll try to introduce it to my arm.

Two year olds are very visual kids, so one of the big ways Adi can imitate me is by painting her arms and legs to look like me. And she does. ?Whenever we?re painting together at home, Adi will start painting herself. I think it?s sweet that she wants to be like me.

RachelandtattoosI have enough tattoos in enough places that hiding them from Adi is impossible. I also plan on getting more, so if I want Adi to develop a sane and healthy attitude towards body modification I have to be open about it with her, and be a good example on how to do it properly and safely.

I let Adi sit in the room with me while I?m getting tattoos. She never stays for long (after a while it gets kind of boring) and she isn?t disruptive. Adi has seen my peacock tattoo in every stage, from start to finish.?Adi saw the peacock when it was just a sketch on paper. She saw the sketches I traded back and forth with my tattoo artist (his name is Babiery Hernandez, and he?s fantastic by the way). She knew where the peacock was going to go on my arm (right under another tattoo), and how big it would be. Tattoo design and implementation takes a long time (for me anyway) and I want Adi to appreciate that. Large tattoos like that also take a long time to physically apply and are rough on the skin, so for the first month of the bird?s existence it was just the outline and shading. Adi also sees that they hurt. I?m not screaming or anything, but tattoos hurt (more in some places) and you can see it in my face. Adi sees the artist ask if I?m okay and she always hears me say that I?m fine. Since seeing my peacock get done, I?m finding that Adi has either a higher tolerance for pain, or is otherwise less dramatic about it.

I also make sure that Adi sees me doing my aftercare routine. She sees me clean it, put on ointment, and look at it to make sure nothing gets infected. That?s hugely important. Tattoos aren?t just a ?set it and forget it? kind of thing. You have to take care of them after you get them. Adi needs to see that too.

Adi can also see that I have a friendly relationship with tattoo artists, and she sees that they?re respectful to our family. She sees that the parlor is clean. She sees that I take it seriously. If, when Adi gets older, she wants tattoos, I want her to take it seriously too.

Adi will tell people about my tattoos too. That ?the man drew the bird? on my arm with ?arm paint? and she?ll point to it. Then she?ll turn to me, point to her arm and ask me where her bird is. I?ll smile and tell her that one day, when she?s a grown up she can get one if she wants.?It?s cute. Some people think it?s a little creepy for a toddler to talk to a picture of a bird on her mother?s arm, but I think it?s cute.

Adi might not get any tattoos at all (her father doesn?t have any? maybe she?ll want to be like him), but if she does, I want to make sure she does it safely, happily, and regret free.

Reviews [Movies]: Starship Invasions - Something Awful

1 2 Next page

Overview: An evil but very inefficient alien race tries to conquer Earth by mind-controlling one person at a time and making them commit suicide while shopping for avocados. Humanity's only hope of salvation lies with the intergalactic U.N., the worst robot ever built, and some drunk guy with a novelty pocket calculator.

Directed By: Ed Hunt, 1977

The Case For: A sci-fi movie released the same year as Star Wars, with a million-dollar budget and starring Christopher Lee as the antagonist? How bad could it be?

The Case Against: Star Wars used up all of the special effects, Christopher Lee doesn't get to move his mouth at any point during the film, and we're pretty sure the million dollars mostly went toward the staggering quantities of meth Ed Hunt et al must have consumed to make this movie.

Imagine a robot cobbled together from irregular trashcans, crazy glue, and some sort of diabolical fanny pack/girdle hybrid. Now imagine this hideously misshapen heap of sparkly latex lurching awkwardly up behind a spandex-clad Christopher Lee, oiling up his state-of-the-art robo-mittens, and proceeding to give the once-proud Man With the Golden Gun the filthiest, shiniest mechanical back rub your feeble organic brain can conjure for a solid 90 minutes or so. Now splice in some occasional footage from the 1979 Space Invaders World Championships and a disturbingly graphic documentary on cerebral gigantism, and finish it off by peppering in a couple shots of nudity so jarring and unnecessary even Rip Torn would find them tasteless. The movie you've just imagined is far better than Starship Invasions in just about every conceivable way, but it still manages to set the appropriate mood. Wait, is suicide a mood?

Starship Invasions (alternate title: Project Genocide) is the gross, throbbing brainchild of writer/director Ed Hunt, who went on to bring us the hard-hitting documentary Flying Saucers are Real!, a film whose otherwise untouchable credibility probably would've taken a slight hit if it tried to use any of the flying saucer effects from Starship Invasions. Not to say that the special effects here are marring an otherwise perfect science-fiction experience. An incredibly simplistic "aliens want to kill all humans because they're dicks" story is somehow strung together from a series of increasingly baffling and arcane plot points. On top of that, most of the so-called acting is of the staring-wordlessly-into-the-camera variety, case in point:

Meanwhile, the costume and set decisions range from tragically stupid to hilariously tragic to nearly Zardoz-ian levels of mind-melting psychedelic insanity, the end result of which is roughly equivalent to physically experiencing the final scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey, except instead of transcending space-time and evolution you just kind of quietly die inside and curl up in a fetal position on the floor next to your dog.

I WANT TO RING FOR SERVICEThe plot, such as it is, opens with a flying saucer (which looks suspiciously like it was pried off the front desk of the production team's Motel 6) wandering the countryside and abducting people, including a hick who makes Randy Quaid look like a slick Manhattanite, and a family who treats the alien spaceship like a bum with a filth-encrusted wash bucket, locking the car doors and avoiding eye contact until it goes away.

The aliens, who for some reason are all decked out in the alternate uniforms rejected by the St. Louis Blues, forgo the traditional anal probing and instead subject their captives to some steamy softcore action for no apparent reason. Seems like a pretty good deal as far as abductions go, at least right up until the kidnappees start offing themselves like Scandinavians*. The movie didn't feel like telling us anything about why any of this might be happening, and it might be our fault for watching it while it was in one of its 'moods,' but either way our best guess is that once you've had zero-G alien sex, there's just no going back to missionary so you might as well just eat a bullet.

*We'd like to take a moment to apologize to any Scandinavian readers out there we might have offended. We are sincerely and deeply sorry that you live in a part of the world so crappy and lame that even the sun won't go there. We wish you the best of luck with your ongoing struggle for survival against the elements, trolls, and endless maddening wastelands surrounding you on all sides, and earnestly pray that you will one day escape the cruel yoke of climate distribution under which God has seen fit to enslave you forever and ever. If you have any comments, please feel free to scribble them on some fish heads with the fermented urine and sheep snot your people use for ink (and also bathe in) and send them by vengeful raven to: trillaphon@somethingawful.com.

Simple method devised for determining atrial fibrillation risk in women

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm, affecting 2.5 million Americans. If left undetected or untreated, atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke. Determining who is at increased risk for atrial fibrillation has been difficult, especially among individuals without established heart disease. But now, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have devised and tested a simple atrial fibrillation risk prediction model, based on six easily obtained factors: a woman's age, height, weight, blood pressure, alcohol consumption and smoking history.

The model is published in the online edition of the European Heart Journal on February 26, 2013.

"The real strength of this model is its simplicity," said Brendan Everett, MD, the lead author of the study and a cardiologist at BWH. "Using this tool, we can estimate an otherwise healthy woman's risk of developing atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years. The tool only requires that a patient's health care provider know some basic information about the patient. There is no need for any advanced testing or additional cost in order to use the risk tool."

The risk prediction model was derived and tested in more than 20,000 middle aged women of European ancestry. Researchers found that the new model was significantly better at identifying women at increased risk for atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years than estimating a woman's risk of atrial fibrillation using her age alone.

"Nearly one in four women were reassigned to a more accurate atrial fibrillation risk category by using the new model," said Everett. "While specific interventions to lower a woman's risk of a first atrial fibrillation episode are still in development, this personalized information can help health care providers stress the importance of heart healthy behaviors, including weight loss and moderation of alcohol consumption."

The study also examined whether recently discovered genetic markers for atrial fibrillation risk improved researchers' ability to accurately predict a woman's risk for atrial fibrillation and indeed, the researchers found that a genetic risk score has potential to improve the ability to predict atrial fribrillation. However, Everett notes that while this information is scientifically interesting, more research on genetic testing is needed before this combination model can be recommended for use in the general public. Further research is also needed to determine if the study results would apply to men or a broader population of women.

Coping with the fallout from an emotional affair - Andrea Sheehy

Coping with the Fallout from an Emotional Affair

Filed under: Relationships ????????? ????????? ????????? Written by andrea ????????? ????????? ????????? ????????? ????????? ????????? ????????? ????????? ?????????
  • ?She keeps talking about this guy at work, and I?m feeling really jealous?
  • ?After several years of marriage, we?ve grown apart. I?m sure he?s seeing someone, and I feel so alone?
  • ?I found out my partner is talking to this woman online; he says it?s not sexual but it makes me feel so wretched?
  • ?If he must have these relationships, why is he talking to her and not me ? what?s so special about her??

Emotional affairs are painful and confusing, and they leave so many unanswered questions:

  • ?What has she got that I don?t??
  • ?Why is he doing this to me??
  • ?How did we get to this point??
  • ?Who is he seeing?
  • ?What is she getting up to at work??

An emotional affair is an intense relationship that has not crossed the sexual boundary.

?But it?s only an emotional affair. Why am I feeling so betrayed??

There is a great temptation to imagine that an emotional affair has much less impact than a sexual affair, but it isn?t true ? trust is something that takes years to build and moments to destroy, and an emotional affair destroys trust every bit as effectively as a sexual affair. It?s not the affair itself that is the problem, it?s the lies, the deceit and the feeling that you?re going nuts that cause the pain.

Emotional affairs

Emotional affairs are very common in long-term relationships. At the start of relationship, hormones are flowing and excitement is high. As the relationship matures, the hormones back off, the novelty fades, and defences begin to play a greater and greater role. I?m not suggesting that anyone consciously chooses to start an emotional affair, it?s just that, given the right circumstances, these things can just happen without our intending them to.

The ?right? circumstances

The ?right? circumstances come about because we all have different ideas about how relationships work and what we need to do for each other in order to be happy. What does this mean? Let?s illustrate this with an example:

maybe you are feeling: or, maybe you are feeling:
maybe you are the kind of person that needs to feel close to your partner in order to feel OK in the world or, maybe you are the kind of person that likes to do things for other people, and you get a kick out of their happiness
As the relationship matures and these defences emerge, arguments become more common:
maybe you are feeling: or, maybe you are feeling:
  • not listened to
  • not desirable
  • taken for granted
  • together but not connected
  • criticised
  • controlled
  • overwhelmed
  • can?t win

?I feel so betrayed; is it worth trying to fix it??

The answer is, it depends. It is possible to recover, but it is painful, and it will take time. I guess you have to ask yourself the question, ?Do I want it to work?? If the answer to that question from both of you is, ?Yes? then there will be a way.

How do we get back to the way things were in the beginning?

  • The first step is to draw a line in the sand, and agree that, whatever has happened in the past, from now on you are both going to focus on building trust. If you have told lies, ?fess-up and start afresh.
  • You need to accept what you both have done and not get into the blame game ? don?t point the finger at your partner and don?t beat yourself up. You might want to blame yourself for being selfish, or you might feel guilty that you didn?t do enough ? accept it, own it, share it.
  • Your feelings are what they are, and you need to just give up on the desire to control them, accept that they are there, and talk about them, especially the ones you really do not want to talk about.
  • The trouble with talking about feelings is it?s difficult to do without them taking over, and then you can end up in a cycle of arguments before you know it. You need to find a way to TALK ABOUT your feelings without ACTING on them.
  • People have different relationship needs, and it?s usually the case that partners have complementary, but different, sets of needs. Maybe you have been wrong in assuming that your partner sees the world the way that you do. Maybe when you both understand where each other is coming from you can take account of that and work out how to make your relationship so deeply satisfying you won?t need to look elsewhere.

How can couple counselling help?

I can help you with all of the above.

  • I provide a safe, secure and confidential environment where you both can explore and come to terms with the trauma of this emotional affair.
  • I can teach you how to talk about emotions, and provide you with structures and techniques that will allow you to talk about the most painful things without getting derailed into arguments.
  • I can help you analyse your arguments and identify the patterns that lead to friction.

Student killed in shooting at South Carolina university

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

A 19-year-old student died as a result of a shooting incident at a residence hall at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., campus officials confirmed early Wednesday morning.

The college sent out an "active shooter alert" email at about 8 p.m. saying a shooting incident had occurred at University Place, a student residence hall, NBC affiliate?WMBF reported.

Fifteen minutes later, staff sent a second alert to ensure the campus that the shooting incident itself was "not ongoing," but the search for the suspect continued.

Anthony Darnell Liddel, a sophomore from Bennettsville, S.C., was identified as the victim, university spokesman Doug Bell confirmed.

An alert posted on the school's website said the suspect "left campus in a vehicle."

Earlier in the night, students were advised to remain in their rooms or classrooms while the investigation continued.

While those in the classrooms were eventually allowed to go home, residence halls remain under lockdown throughout the night.

Campus police determined there was no apparent threat to students, so Wednesday classes will be held as regularly scheduled, the university said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has taken over the investigation from campus police, WMBF reported.

Counselors and ministers will be available Wednesday morning to provide assistance to students, university officials said.

NBC News' Tricia Culligan and Denise Ono contributed to this report.

Ikea's Swedish meatballs latest victim of horsemeat scandal

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish furniture giant Ikea was drawn into Europe's widening food labeling scandal Monday as authorities said they had detected horse meat in frozen meatballs labeled as beef and pork and sold in 13 countries across the continent.

The Czech State Veterinary Administration said that horse meat was found in one-kilogram packs of frozen meatballs made in Sweden and shipped to the Czech Republic for sale in Ikea stores there. A total of 760 kilograms (1,675 pounds) of the meatballs were stopped from reaching the shelves.

Ikea spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson said meatballs from the same batch had gone out to Slovakia, Hungary, France, Britain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Ireland. Magnusson said meatballs from that batch were taken off the shelves in Ikea stores in all those countries. Other shipments of meatballs were not affected, she added.

However, the company's Swedish branch announced on its Facebook page that it won't sell or serve any meatballs at its stores in Sweden out of concern for "potential worries among our customers."

Magnusson said Ikea saw no reason to extend that guidance globally. She said Ikea was conducting its own tests of the affected batch. She also said that two weeks ago Ikea tested a range of frozen food products, including meatballs, and found no traces of horse meat.

Ikea's stores feature restaurants and also sell typical Swedish food, including the so-called Kottbullar meatballs.

European Union officials were meeting Monday to discuss tougher food labeling rules after the discovery of horse meat in a range of frozen supermarket meals such as burgers and lasagna that were supposed to contain beef or pork.

The Czech authority also announced Monday that it found horse meat in beef burgers imported from Poland during random tests of food products.

Spanish authorities, meanwhile, announced that traces of horse meat were found in a beef cannelloni product by one of the brands of Nestle, a Switzerland-based food giant. The Agriculture Ministry said it was a case of fraudulent labeling but represented no health threat.

In a statement on its website, Nestle Spain said that after carrying out tests on meat supplied to its factories in Spain it was withdrawing six "La Cocinera" products and one "Buitoni" product from store shelves.

It said it was taking the action after the traces of horse meat were found in beef bought from a supplier in central Spain. Nestle said it was taking legal action against the company, adding that the products would be replaced by ones with 100 percent beef.

Some EU member states are pressing for tougher labeling rules to regain consumer confidence.

The 27-nation bloc must agree on binding origin disclosures for food product ingredients, starting with a better labeling of meat products, German agriculture minister Ilse Aigner said.

"Consumers have every right to the greatest-possible transparency," she insisted.

Austria backs the German initiative; but others like Ireland say existing rules are sufficient although Europe-wide controls must be strengthened to address the problem of fraudulent labeling.

The scandal has created a split between nations like Britain who see further rules as a protectionist hindrance of free trade under the bloc's single market, and those calling for tougher regulation.

Processed food products ? a business segment with traditionally low margins that often leads producers to hunt for the cheapest suppliers ? often contain ingredients from multiple suppliers in different countries, who themselves at time subcontract production to others, making it hard to monitor every link in the production chain.

Standardized DNA checks with meat suppliers and more stringent labeling rules will add costs that producers will most likely hand down to consumers, making food more expensive.

The scandal began in Ireland in mid-January when the country's announced the results of its first-ever DNA tests on beef products. It tested frozen beef burgers taken from store shelves and found that more than a third of brands at five supermarkets contained at least a trace of horse. The sample of one brand sold by British supermarket kingpin Tesco was more than a quarter horse.

Such discoveries have spread like wildfire across Europe as governments, supermarkets, meat traders and processors began their own DNA testing of products labeled beef and have been forced to withdraw tens of millions of products from store shelves.

More than a dozen nations have detected horse flesh in processed products such as factory-made burger patties, lasagnas, meat pies and meat-filled pastas. The investigations have been complicated by elaborate supply chains involving multiple cross-border middlemen.

Seals take scientists to Antarctic's ocean floor

SYDNEY | Mon Feb 25, 2013 10:54pm EST

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Elephant seals wearing head sensors and swimming deep beneath Antarctic ice have helped scientists better understand how the ocean's coldest, deepest waters are formed, providing vital clues to understanding its role in the world's climate.

The tagged seals, along with sophisticated satellite data and moorings in ocean canyons, all played a role in providing data from the extreme Antarctic environment, where observations are very rare and ships could not go, said researchers at the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystem CRC in Tasmania.

Scientists have long known of the existence of "Antarctic bottom water," a dense, deep layer of water near the ocean floor that has a significant impact on the movement of the world's oceans.

Three areas where this water is formed were known of, and the existence of a fourth suspected for decades, but the area was far too inaccessible, until now, thanks to the seals.

"The seals went to an area of the coastline that no ship was ever going to get to," said Guy Williams, ACE CRC Sea Ice specialist and co-author of the study.

"This is a particular form of Antarctic water called Antarctic bottom water production, one of the engines that drives ocean circulation," he told Reuters. "What we've done is found another piston in that engine."

Southern Ocean Elephant seals are the largest of all seals, with males growing up to six meters (20 feet) long and weighing up to 4,000 kilograms (8,800 lbs).

Twenty of the seals were deployed from Davis Station in east Antarctica in 2011 with a sensor, weighing about 100 to 200 grams, on their head. Each of the sensors had a small satellite relay which transmitted data on a daily basis during the five to 10 minute intervals when the seals surfaced.

"We get four dives worth of data a day but they're actually doing up to 60 dives," he said.

"The elephant seals ... went to the very source and found this very cold, very saline dense water in the middle of winter beneath a polynya, which is what we call an ice factory around the coast of Antarctica," Williams added.

Previous studies have shown that there are 50-year-long trends in the properties of the Antarctic bottom water, and Williams said the latest study will help better assess those changes, perhaps providing clues for climate change modeling.

"Several of the seals foraged on the continental slope as far down as 1,800 meters (1.1 miles), punching through into a layer of this dense water cascading down the abyss," he said in a statement. "They gave us very rare and valuable wintertime measurements of this process."

Linpus Gesture2Launch brings neat, customizable touch control to Windows 8 (hands-on)

Linpus GestureLaunch brings neat, customizable touch control to Windows 8 handson video

You might remember Linpus from its various Linux projects, but these days the outfit is getting into apps in a big way. We've just been hands-on with its latest offering, Gesture2Launch, a straightforward concept that could prove seriously useful to those with Windows 8 touch-enabled devices. The current app has default gestures that can be assigned to an array of functions -- both to launch applications and to trigger system actions. Most of the gestures are based on letters, so to launch the calculator you'd just bring up the charms bar (which primes the system for your input) and then draw the letter 'C'. An upside-down 'U' would bring up the lock screen.

The version we played with, however, takes things a step further. It lets you create your own gestures, which ought to make them a tad easier to remember. This feature should be added soon, but for now you can see how we fared with the app in the video after the break (demoed on a rather nice Acer Aspire S7) and then it try out free-of-charge via the link below. It leaves us wondering why Microsoft didn't implement something like this out of the box.

Japan to raise $10 billion through Japan Tobacco share sale

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government will sell around a third of its stake in Japan Tobacco Inc , the world's No.3 tobacco company, to raise about $10.4 billion for reconstruction of areas devastated by a 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The Ministry of Finance, which owns just over 50 percent of the $62 billion former state monopoly, is selling 333 million shares, according to a regulatory filing on Monday, with the deal to be priced between March 11-13.

The offering, the largest such deal since the U.S. Treasury's $20.7 billion sale of American International Group Inc shares in September, comes as Japanese equities scale their highest levels in more than four years.

Japan's parliament in 2011 passed a set of bills including tax hikes and government share sales in state-owned companies to help finance the roughly $270 billion it expects to spend to rebuild the northeast coast after the quake in March that year.

Reuters reported early last week that the stake sale would be launched within days.

Conditions for a sell-down in the government's stake in Japan Tobacco have improved in recent months, with the benchmark Nikkei share average <.n225> hitting a 53-month high on Monday. A broad market rally began in mid-November after the calling of an early election that put Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in power a month later. Abe has promised aggressive monetary and fiscal policies to tackle prolonged deflation.

Prior to the stake sale, Japan Tobacco, whose cigarette brands include Winston, Camel, Benson & Hedges and Mild Seven, will buy back as much as 250 billion yen ($2.7 billion) worth of its own shares, Monday's filing showed.

GROWTH PROSPECTS

Shares in Japan Tobacco have outperformed rival Philip Morris International Inc and British American Tobacco Plc since the bill approving the sell-down was approved in 2011, Thomson Reuters data shows, with investors welcoming reduced state control. http://r.reuters.com/guz26t

"We see ample room for JT to increase their share buybacks and dividends going forward as they have no net debt," Oscar Veldhuijzen, a London-based fund manager with The Children's Investment Fund Management (UK) LLP and a holder of Japan Tobacco stock, said before Monday's filing. "JT has the best growth prospects amongst the three major tobacco companies, as two-thirds of their profits come from Japan and Russia, where tobacco prices remain far below other countries on a PPP (purchasing price parity) basis."

Debt holders are also optimistic about the firm's ability to generate free cashflow after the share buy back is completed. Yields on its 2014 eurobond have tumbled 18 basis points this month and are currently at 0.60 percent.

Shares in Japan Tobacco closed on Monday at 2,901 yen, up 1.4 percent on the day. At that price, the share sale would be valued at about 967 billion yen.

Japanese law requires the government to hold at least one-third of Japan Tobacco's 2 billion shares outstanding.

Japan's large and liquid stock market is used to digesting big offerings, such as the $8.5 billion IPO of Japan Airlines Co Ltd in September and a $2.3 billion follow-on deal by All Nippon Airways Co .

Last month, U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP raised about $1.7 billion by selling shares in Japan's Aozora Bank Ltd .

Overall, equity issuance in Japan rose 16.8 percent last year to $26.4 billion, driven by large IPOs and a flurry of activity that made 2012 the busiest year for deals since 2008, Thomson Reuters data showed.

The ministry last June selected JPMorgan Chase & Co , Daiwa Securities Group Inc , Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Mizuho Securities as underwriters for the Japan Tobacco offering.

Nomura Holdings Inc was not selected as an underwriter after its involvement in an insider trading scandal. But a source familiar with the details said on Monday that Japan's largest investment bank had been given a lesser role in the sale, along with SMBC Nikko Securities, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, Merrill Lynch and UBS AG .

Japan also plans to sell shares of Japan Post Holdings Co, which runs the nation's biggest savings institution, to raise money for post-quake reconstruction.

Doing good is good for you: Volunteer adolescents enjoy healthier hearts

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Giving back through volunteering is good for your heart, even at a young age, according to University of British Columbia researchers.

For their study, published February 25 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, researchers from UBC's Faculty of Education and Department of Psychology wanted to find out how volunteering might impact physical health among adolescents.

"It was encouraging to see how a social intervention to support members of the community also improved the health of adolescents," says Hannah Schreier, who conducted this research during her doctoral studies at UBC.

Researchers split 106 Grade 10 students from an urban, inner-city Vancouver high school into two groups -- a group that volunteered regularly for 10 weeks and a group that was wait-listed for volunteer activities. The researchers measured the students' body mass index (BMI), inflammation and cholesterol levels before and after the study. They also assessed the students' self-esteem, mental health, mood, and empathy.

The volunteer group of students spent one hour per week working with elementary school children in after-school programs in their neighborhood. After 10 weeks they had lower levels of inflammation and cholesterol and lower BMIs than the students who were wait-listed.

"The volunteers who reported the greatest increases in empathy, altruistic behaviour and mental health were the ones who also saw the greatest improvements in their cardiovascular health," says Schreier, now a postdoctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality in Canada and the United States. The first signs of the disease can begin to appear during adolescence. Previous studies show that psychosocial factors, such as stress, depression and wellbeing, play a role in the disease.

Hackers target visitors to NBC's site

NBC.com has been found to harbor the RedKit browser exploit kit, which can deliver malware to vulnerable computers.?

The main website for the NBC television network, NBC.com, was found yesterday to have been hacked so that it infected unsuspecting visitors.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Specifically, it harbored the RedKit browser exploit kit, which triggers?drive-by downloads?of malware onto vulnerable computers.

The hack was one of a trio of security breaches yesterday, as the Aspen Institute think tank and the customer-support specialist Zendesk disclosed hacker intrusions into their networks.

NBC's problems arose when the head of Dutch security firm Fox-IT?tweeted his observations?about NBC.com, followed quickly by a posting on the?HitmanPro blog?run by the Dutch anti-virus firm SurfRight.

"There were two exploit links on the NBC website. The first one was on the main default (entry) page. And the second one was located on hxxp://www.nbc.com/assets/core/js/s_wrapper.js," said the HitmanPro blog. "It serves both Java (CVE-2013-0422) and PDF exploits. The exploit drops the Citadel Trojan, which is used for banking fraud and cyberespionage."

The?Java exploit?referred to, which affects Macs, Windows PCs and Linux boxes alike, was responsible for the recently announced hacks into Apple's, Facebook's and Twitter's employee networks.

[Why and How to Disable Java on Your Computer]

The HitmanPro posting noted that RedKit was also installing the ZeroAccess malware, which "moderates an affected user's Internet experience by modifying search results, and generates pay-per-click advertising revenue for its controllers," as well an unknown form of malware.

Stand-alone NBC TV network sites, such as those for "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and one featuring "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno's collection of vintage cars, were also said to be compromised.

An NBC spokeswoman?confirmed the hacks to Bloomberg News. All the affected sites were cleaned and back up Friday morning.

(The NBCNews.com website, with which TechNewsDaily has a professional relationship, was not affected.)

Israel treats wounded Syrians on border, evacuates them to Israeli hospital

Associated Press - Feb 16, 2013
foxnews.com

JERUSALEM ?? Israeli soldiers provided medical treatment to wounded Syrians that approached its northern frontier and then transported them to a hospital in Israel for further treatment, the military said Saturday, in the first instance of Syrians fleeing their country's civil war being taken into the Jewish state.

A military spokeswoman says soldiers gave the injured Syrians initial medical treatment near the security fence along the frontier in the Golan Heights and then evacuated them to an Israeli hospital. She would not elaborate further and spoke on condition of anonymity in line with protocol.

The seven wounded Syrians are receiving medical treatment at Ziv hospital in the northern city of Safed. A hospital spokeswoman said they sustained serious injuries to internal organs and limbs. She said one is in critical condition and the rest are in serious condition.

Israel and Syria have fought several wars and although the two nations have been enemies, Israel is concerned that if the Assad regime is toppled, Syria could fall into the hands of Islamic extremists, or anti-Israel fighters such as Hezbollah could gain access to Assad's stockpile of chemical weapons. There also are concerns that al-Qaida-linked groups battling Assad could turn their focus toward Israel.

"It was on a humanitarian basis," Israeli Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon told channel two TV. "Refugees approached the border, received medical treatment, and we decided to bring them in for treatment in our territory in light of their condition," he said. Yaalon stressed that there is no change in Israeli policy and that a large influx of Syrians will not be allowed.

It was unclear if the Syrians are rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, forces loyal to him or civilians caught in the crossfire.

Syrian activists reported fighting in the Quneitra region on Saturday, which is on the cease-fire line between Syria and Israel in the Golan Heights.

Israel has said its policy is not to get involved in the Syrian civil war. It has however retaliated to sporadic Syrian fire that has spilled over into Israeli communities in the Golan Heights. Several mortar shells have exploded in orchards, spreading panic, sparking fires and prompting Israeli forces to fire back.

In November, Israeli tanks struck a Syrian artillery launcher after a mortar shell flew into Israeli-held territory.
The conflict has already spilled over into several of Syria's other neighbors ? whether through direct violence or via the flood of refugees fleeing the bloodshed.

Israel has warily watched the fighting in Syria, carefully trying to avoid any involvement. It has found itself in a difficult position as the fighting rages near its frontier with the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau it captured from Syria in the 1967 war. Despite constant hostility between the two countries, Syria has been careful to keep the border quiet since the 1973 Mideast war. Syria has over the years provided support and refuge for Israel's bitterest enemies, including the Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

Herbalife profit beats estimates; raises full-year forecast

(Reuters) - Weight-loss and vitamin company Herbalife Ltd posted a quarterly profit that beat Wall Street expectations, helped by stronger sales primarily in Asia Pacific, and raised its full-year earnings outlook.

Herbalife, which also sells energy, sports & fitness and personal care products, now expects earnings of $4.45 (2.8 pounds) to $4.65 per share for the year, up from its prior view of $4.02 to $4.05 per share.

Analysts on average were expecting earnings of $4.64 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company's stock has become the site of a battle royale between some of the hedge fund industry's biggest players, including Pershing Square Capital's William Ackman and Icahn Enterprises' Carl Icahn.

Activist investor Ackman alleged in December that the company was a "pyramid scheme" and said he was shorting the stock.

However, Icahn and hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb revealed long positions in the stock. Loeb said the stock could rise as much as $68.

The company said last month it expected a temporary bump in expenses due to its fight with Ackman.

The company's fourth-quarter income rose to $117.8 million, or $1.05 per share, from $105.4 million, or 86 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose about 20 percent to $1.06 billion.

Analysts had expected earnings of $1.03 per share on revenue of $1.05 billion.

Herbalife shares closed at $39.74 on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
