The Armchair Genealogist: The Moment I Knew - Kim's Story

It began with a photo.? The year was 2003 and I was planning my wedding.? I cannot remember when exactly, it wasn?t a conscious decision, but my Grandmother?s wedding photo became my inspiration, my obsession and the all consuming driving force behind my plans.? I incorporated the photo on our invitations; ?I showed it to the florist so she could replicate my Grandmother?s bouquet; ?I asked my photographer to take the same type of studio photos; ?and I chose suits for my husband and his best man, very similar to those worn by my Grandfather and his best man.? What had begun as a normal modern wedding had become a full blown themed affair by also asking our guests to dress in 1920?s styled clothing.? As a final gesture, I dedicated the wedding to the memory of my grandparents.?

It became apparent to me that my grandmother was looking over me from heaven above to ensure that everything would go smoothly.? Perhaps, because I was 44, she was happy that finally I was to be married and she was determined to be there for me, if not in body, then in spirit.? When plans veered towards disaster, things fell into place, as if by divine intervention, at the 11th hour.? Two months before the big day, it became apparent that the hall we had booked would not accommodate old time dancing.? Coincidentally, I found the perfect venue, boasting a large timber floor, available for only $100 and it happened to be next door to the church where my grandparents were married!? Then, two weeks before the wedding, I discovered that I hadn?t actually confirmed my booking with the photographers.? Mysteriously their booking for that day had been crossed out, making them available for me.? The most intriguing incident, however, occurred when we went to pay the caterers.? I had booked them online and only dealt with them by phone.? The church bells were ringing loudly on the day I discovered they operated out of an old house that had been a funeral home, formerly operated by the same funeral director who took care of my Grandmother?s funeral arrangements.? By now I was comforted in the firm belief that Nanna Lyons, my Arch Angel, was indeed fluttering her protective wings around me.

Nanna was the common thread that held together the fabric of our expansive family tree.? She was a person of connections.? She connected with her 11 siblings, their children and theirs.? She connected with so many lives that she always seemed to be attending weddings and funerals.? I recall my uncle commenting once that ?some Mothers collect spoons, others collect tea cosies, but my Mother collects funerals?.? After attending such events, the storyteller in her would give us a running commentary of who attended and what they were wearing.? Her attention to detail was incredible and it is a trait that I have inherited from her.?

When I was a child, a shopping trip to town with Nanna and Pop Lyons would always end at the house of a friend or relative.? For me, this was a time of learning.? While the adults gossiped and told stories over a cuppa, I quietly listened and learned.? I learnt how to fit all the names to faces and where those faces fit on our family tree.? This was quite a feat as Nanna came from such a large family, but it was an education in the importance of keeping out family stories alive.

Young brides are fortunate that their Grandparents are usually still living and able to attend their weddings.? However, I was 44 and my Grandparents, Great Aunts and Great Uncles, who held important places in my life, had all passed.? In honour of their memory, I created a Memory Wall.? Even in spirit, they were my VIP guests, and I set about purging my memory for stories to bring these family treasures to life.? This was my way of introducing them to our living guests who hadn?t the privilege of knowing them.?

I recaptured the youthful free-spirited Aunty Nelly Hourigan of the 1920s, riding across the sunlit plains on her favourite steed to meet her current beau. ?I recorded how Nanna Lyons would bribe me to drive her to church by giving me the keys to Pop?s brand new Triumph car.? I remembered 80 year old Uncle Tom?s exclaiming ?you can?t believe everything you see on TV?, while the eyes of the world watched Neil Armstrong take his first steps on the Moon.??? I reminisced about the time my cousin Susan and I sat for hours, following Grandad Hendy?s instructions to the letter, in order to see our future in his crystal ball. I recollected with amusement, the story of how Pop Lyons and Uncle Tom had mischievously worked all night in the cane fields, loading cane onto trucks allocated to other farmers, just so they could attend the Races the following day. ?These stories and more, struck a chord with cousins, Aunts and Uncles alike, as my memories were also theirs.

This was my moment of revelation.? Planning my wedding turned out to be an educational journey.? It taught me the importance of preserving our family stories for future generations. ?I truly believe that my Grandmother was the shining light, guiding me on this journey. ?So, to her, I give thanks. ?She lit the path with clues, none brighter than the caterers? venue that was once a funeral home.? ?Perhaps it was preordained that the life of my Grandmother, the ?funeral collector?, would end on the way to a friend?s funeral.? As for me, life as the family story teller began with my wedding.? Ironically, weddings and funerals are the embodiment of our life stories.? Whilst one celebrates beginnings, the other represents endings, and yet on both occasions our families gather, relive and reminisce what happens in between.? Most importantly, this ensures that our stories are never forgotten.

Meet Kim Chambers?

Kim lives in Townsville, North Queensland, Australia, with ?her husband of 9 years.?

She grew up on a sugar cane farm, near a small town called Giru, where her pioneering ancestors settled at the turn of the 20th century.? During her?childhood, she was surrounded by such interesting characters as her Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Great Aunts, Great Uncles and so on up the trunk of the family tree, and she remembers feeling very proud that she possessed a Great Grandmother as old as 90, something not many other kids could boast.?

Ten years ago, she discovered scrapbooking and Kim was immediately drawn to the idea of creating a heritage album.? Initially Kim only intended to scrap the photos she had and not to delve too deeply into family history.? However, her nagging need to write, led her to fill her scrapbook pages with reams of writing as she kept discovering the stories behind the faces.?

Now Kim regularly meets with a network of cousins and Aunts who are equally interested preserving their family history.?Kim has since?begun to write stories of her childhood memories.?

Kim considers herself an amateur family historian, she is not a blogger and this is her first online writing experience. I know the online genealogy community will give her a warm welcome.?

Shrew Soft VPN

Shrew Soft VPN Client (Free) is a freely available IPSEC client for Windows and Linux machines used to connect to a Virtual Private Network. Organizations are increasingly offering employees remote VPN access to protect their network, data, and applications from outside threats. However, many of the vendor client offerings can be expensive and difficult to install. The Shrew Soft VPN client takes the complexity out of the equation and makes establishing the VPN connection as simple as possible for the end-user.

Shrew Soft's VPN software is a true VPN client in that it connects to an existing VPN server, whether that's from the big giants such as Cisco or Juniper, or from smaller players such as Cisco's Linksys. If you already have a VPN server, then you should definitely consider Shrew Soft. If you don't have a VPN server handy?either as a stand-alone product or as a feature on a firewall or a router?you would be better served looking at one of the all-in-one VPN software such as our Editors' Choices Logmein Hamachi and Comodo Unite. With these products, you can create a VPN connection between individual endpoints and have secure connection on the fly.

Features
Shrew Soft's VPN client is capable of working with VPN servers from several major commercial vendors, including Cisco, Zyxel, and Juniper Networks. The software's website has instructions on configuring the software to work with Adtran NetVanta, Check Point NGx, Cisco ASA, Cisco IOS, Cisco PIX, DrayTek, Fortigate, Fritz!Box, Juniper SSG (with and without certificates), Lancom, Linksys, NetASQ, Netgear, Sidewinder 6.x, Sidewinder 7.x, Sonicwall, and ZyXEL Zywall. There are instructions on the Juniper Networks knowledgebase on configuring the client to work with SRX Services Gateway and ScreenOS firewalls, as well. It can handle Cisco VPN connections that rely on pre-shared keys or certificates (IPSec) or with AnyConnect (SSL VPN).

The client supports a variety of operating systems, including Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, several Linux distributions, and OpenBSD. For organizations with a heterogeneous network, Shrew Soft's software allows them to standardize on one VPN client, regardless of the operating systems running.?

The fact that Macs aren't supported is disappointing. Considering the increasing numbers of Macs in the workplace, having a single client for all platforms would make the software a much stronger competitor.

Some advanced features are supported, including Split Tunneling, Split DNS, Nat Traversal, IKE Fragmentation, Packet Pre Fragmentation, Dead Peer Detection, Hybrid XAuth and automatic client configuration.

Support
The Shrew Soft Website offers a thorough wiki with detailed setup instructions and screenshots on how to configure products from specific vendors. There are how-tos for open source gateways including OpenSWAN, StrongSWAN, m0n0wal, and pfSense.

One thing I like about Shrew Soft is the fact that it supports multiple VPN servers. In a scenario where a user needs to connect to multiple networks, and if they don't have the same type of server, that user would normally have to install client software for each connection. That can easily get messy and difficult, if the tools wind up conflicting with each other. With Shrew Soft, everything is configured easily under one tool, making it easy to switch back and forth.

Installation and Setup
Getting started is a breeze, as the user downloads the desired version for the operating system directly from the website. No registration required. After downloading and installing the software, users can launch Shrew Soft VPN Access Manager.

If the IT department has a Cisco .pcf VPN configuration file already available, the process is even easier. All the user has to do is save the .pcf file somewhere on the local computer, and then go to the VPN Access Manager's File menu to import the file. Once the file has been imported, an icon with the file name will appear on the screen. Click on it once and hit connect to establish a VPN tunnel.

If the .pcf file has an encrypted password, some versions of Shrew Soft VPN may not be able to access that information. You will then need to obtain the required information from the IT department and replace the encrypted password.

Anatomy Of An Open Source Acquisition: From GlusterFS To Red Hat Storage

glusterGluster was founded in 2005 to productize their eponymous global distributed filesystem, GlusterFS. As an all-software solution for storing immense quantities of distributed and replicated data, it quickly caught the eye of many working with big data including Red Hat, who purchased the company late last year. Yesterday at Red Hat Summit, Red Hat officially announced their branded solution based upon the Gluster foundation: Red Hat Storage. As an all-software storage solution, Red Hat Storage lives atop the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system and provides robust scale-out storage for both block and file level volumes. Prior to its acquisition, Gluster had raised over $8 million in funding. Red Hat bought them for $138 million. That's a pretty remarkable difference between those two numbers. I spoke with a number of Red Hat executives about the acquisition, specifically asking if they felt they'd gotten their money's worth.

Following the Voice within: all together now

Over the course of the past two weeks, there have been a number of discussions which my partner and I have had that consistently underline that the 'real world' (in comparison to the theoretical world as written in books and taught in schools) is far more complex and organically diversified in operation.

It isn't just a matter of a rainbow vs. black/white...but that the rainbow itself doesn't have a set of a half-dozen or so discrete colours.? To expand a phrase I have used for years, "Nature doesn't read textbooks, so it does things which the textbooks say it can't."

We, as humans, are part of nature.? Whether it is discussions of relationships, sexuality, or even as basic as how we perceive the universe around us, no two people are identical and divisions created to group folks are arbitrary.? Indeed, all of the divisions we make about nearly everything are imaginary and arbitrary.

We are all connected, all together, all one.? That which separates us is not without but within.? It is our misperceptions, misconceptions and lack of understanding that keeps us apart.

Avoiding Asthma Attacks | Healthy Lifestyles At Any Age

You should be able to avoid a lot of asthma attacks if you follow the tips presented in this article. Keep reading and try these tips the next time you feel an attack coming.

Every time you have an asthma attack, you should ask yourself what caused it and write down the different things you were exposed to right before your attack. This is the best way to find out if you are allergic to something, or if your asthma is only triggered by dust particles in the air or physical activity. You should also write down the date of your asthma attack to find out if you are more likely to suffer from your asthma during a particular season, which could mean you are allergic to pollen or need to stay away from humidity.

If you think your asthma attacks are triggered by something you are allergic to, you should go to an allergist. Your allergist will conduct a series of tests to find out if you are allergic to certain things. Depending on the nature of your allergy, you might be able to take a prescription medication to reduce the unpleasant effects, including your asthma. Unfortunately, most allergies cannot be cured and you will have to learn to avoid the things you are allergic to.

Ask your doctor about different asthma medications that will work for your specific situation. You can either take pills or use a breather to regulate your breathing during an asthma attack. You might have to try different solutions before you find the right product and the right dosage. You should subscribe to a good health insurance plan to have these expenses covered, and expect to spend money every month on your asthma medication or your breathers.

Make changes to your environment. If dryness or humidity have triggered attacks in the past, get a moisturizer or isolate your home more efficiently. You should also keep your home as clean as possible and avoid using aerosol products. Replace carpeting with hardwood floors and wash your bed linen regularly to avoid microscopic organisms from developing in your home, especially if you are allergic to these. Keep in mind that a healthy home will reduce your asthma attacks and help prevent asthma in your young children.

Find alternatives to the things you have to avoid. If pollen triggers asthma attacks, purchase only female plants in order to reduce the presence of pollen in the air. If some foods are a problem, go to a nutritionist to find out about healthy alternatives. Make sure you adopt a diet that contains everything your body needs. Physical activity should also be avoided, but you can stay in shape by developing a fitness program that is adapted to your condition. Do an exercise for a few minutes and take a long break before you resume your routine.

Living with asthma is not easy, but you will eventually learn to manage your condition efficiently. Go to your doctor, get a good medication and keep track of what triggers your attacks until you can develop a new lifestyle that is more adapted to your condition.

Can Team development Increase Productiveness in a Economic ...

When the overall economy is sluggish, company supervisors and frontrunners have to be extremely cautious along with every expenditure. As a result, we're going to often put off hiring brand new employees until more conviction in the marketplace evolves. Although organic efficiencies will experience in a down economy, may team building activities help increase productivity so that we can avoid the cost of adding on brand new personnel? What is anxiety that question is... "Well... It depends...Inch

Don't Confuse "Morale" with "Productivity"

Team development is almost a normal term utilized for both "morale building" activities and "productivity building" activities interchangeable, however, if you befuddle the two activities, you can make some costly mistakes. Morale creating activities normally include anything from going out to a movie with each other to an office holiday party to entertainment design activities from annual conferences ans conventions. These activities give a shared-experience that generates temporary companionship and provides an exciting relief to the normal day-to-day rat-race.

Output building activities are education events or innovations that assist teams do more along with less. Although people will often phone both of these varieties of activities "Team Building", the actions themselves obtain totally different outcomes. Both are necessary to create a group culture, yet quite often, supervisors and frontrunners will timetable one type of exercise hoping to get the needed result from one other type of exercise and be sorely unhappy.

Although productivity will often increase (sometimes significantly) when morale improves, an increase in morale won't always cause a team to be more effective. For instance, if a manager arrived to the office and announced that the entire group would obtain the whole week off of and still receives a commission, morale would skyrocket, yet productivity would drop to zero for your week. Morale building pursuits like team journeys and business parties can be extremely important, however they can't completely replace productivity building events and activities.

Since the group atmosphere developed by morale creating activities may be temporary, you will want to schedule pursuits like this often so that the personal team members be able to interact with each other in a more pleasurable way to create camaraderie. Charity team building events at twelve-monthly meetings or conventions can be a great way to insert a morale building exercise. These team building events functions are extremely economical, as the company may generate great public relations without having increasing the cost of conducting a conference or twelve-monthly meeting. For example, most conventions are going to have some form of entertainment or otherwise a company getaway of some kind. Many companies are replacing these types of activities which has a charity cycle build or a team scavenger hunt where associates build gift baskets for soldiers. The investment inside each exercise is fairly similar, but the link between the charity activities usually provide influential, lasting thoughts that create great companionship between associates.

Build Squads by Education Team Members Collectively

In addition to morale building activities, a group also needs to create new skills to keep them effective. Many years ago, a mentor regarding mine informed me that "You cannot build a group by education individuals, however you can develop a team by simply training folks together.Inch I didn't truly understand the electrical power of this suggestions until I started my own organization, but I comprehend it more and more while my company expands and expands. For instance, many big businesses offer tuition assistance for higher level degrees for their staff, but what often happens is that a company will invest a huge amount of money in the development of an employee only to have the person abandon the company and commence working for a competitor. Such a thing happens because the personal employees is growing, but the group as a whole is stagnant.

Curiously, any skill development activities will work to construct the team culture in an firm if the expertise developed increases the team an aggressive advantage out there. For instance, Apple decided to eradicate cash registers inside their Apple Stores and replace them the ability for just about any employee within the store as a way to use his or her smartphones to ring-up items for purchases on their smartphones. Due to the fact Apple is performing something that who else is doing, employees who have been competed in this brand new technology seem like they are an element of an elite team that is not the same as other shops. Whether they are or not really doesn't matter, as the team feel that they are in front of the curve. Buyers can find a good Apple staff and in seconds create a buy and have the bill sent to the customer via email and be on their way. A remarkable increase in productivity and decrease in cost while making more of a group atmosphere amongst employees.

"Soft-Skills" Team development Training is Most Productive

The most effective group training to improve productivity emanates from "soft-skills" training, although. While Hard-Skills are ones essential to performing individual careers within a business - for example hard-skills for an engineer might be calculus and physics : soft-Skills are expertise that increase productivity no matter what specific part that a individual has in a organization. Soft-skills would include communication expertise, presentation expertise, the ability to convince people, the opportunity to coach and mentor other folks, etc. If the engineer enhances in any or all of these soft-skills, he then or she is going to likely improve their individual achievement as well as the overall success of the team.

Any time teams teach together during these soft-skill areas, they automatically create that identical type of group culture in which Apple created with the technology change. Affiliates know that they're a part of a distinctive, elite team that is not the same as most agencies (because most agencies don't teach this way).

For example, a few years ago, I was hired with a commercial design company to assist them to deliver high-level income presentations greater. Companies that create skyscrapers or have groups of construction projects often put money out these types of huge projects in one big contract, so they really will often obtain huge plans and have every qualified service provider come in and do a business presentation to define the field. The corporation that hired me was closing about one out of six of these delivering presentations, but wished to increase their quantities. So we executed a series of business presentation skills courses with the groups of presenters. Simply because they trained with each other, they created a team culture that arrived when they executed their delivering presentations. Quite often, at the conclusion of their delivering presentations, the board members who had been in the target audience would declare, "We chose this group given that they just appeared to work very well together.Inch The team culture showed, as the individuals inside group was trained in soft-skills with each other, so they found themselves while having an edge over other speakers (and they experienced one.)

Business presentation skills, people skills, coaching, guidance, and other soft-skills education can really help groups become more effective as long as the actual teams are going through the training together. I remember my own college football instructor telling us all, "You don't combat for data or awards, you combat for the dude who is beside you within the trenches.Inch When groups train with each other, they develop a rapport in which lasts.

Scientists find new primitive mineral in meteorite

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? In 1969, an exploding fireball tore through the sky over Mexico, scattering thousands of pieces of meteorite across the state of Chihuahua. More than 40 years later, the Allende meteorite is still serving the scientific community as a rich source of information about the early stages of our solar system's evolution. Recently, scientists from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) discovered a new mineral embedded in the space rock -- one they believe to be among the oldest minerals formed in the solar system.

Dubbed panguite, the new titanium oxide is named after Pan Gu, the giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by separating yin from yang to create the earth and the sky. The mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification. A paper outlining the discovery and the properties of this new mineral will be published in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist, and is available online now.

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," says Chi Ma, a senior scientist and director of the Geological and Planetary Sciences division's Analytical Facility at Caltech and corresponding author on the paper.

The Allende meteorite is the largest carbonaceous chondrite -- a diverse class of primitive meteorites -- ever found on our planet and is considered by many the best-studied meteorite in history. As a result of an ongoing nanomineralogy investigation of primitive meteorites -- which Ma has been leading since 2007 -- nine new minerals, including panguite, have been found in the Allende meteorite. Some of those new finds include the minerals allendeite, hexamolybdenum, tistarite, and kangite. Nanomineralogy looks at tiny particles of minerals and the minuscule features within those minerals.

"The intensive studies of objects in this meteorite have had a tremendous influence on current thinking about processes, timing, and chemistry in the primitive solar nebula and small planetary bodies," says coauthor George Rossman, the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Mineralogy at Caltech.

Panguite was observed first under a scanning electron microscope in an ultra-refractory inclusion embedded in the meteorite. Refractory inclusions are among the first solid objects formed in our solar system, dating back to before the formation of Earth and the other planets. "Refractory" refers to the fact that these inclusions contain minerals that are stable at high temperatures and in extreme environments, which attests to their likely formation as primitive, high-temperature liquids produced by the solar nebula.

According to Ma, studies of panguite and other newly discovered refractory minerals are continuing in an effort to learn more about the conditions under which they formed and subsequently evolved. "Such investigations are essential to understand the origins of our solar system," he says.

Additional authors on the American Mineralogist paper, "Panguite, (Ti4+,Sc,Al,Mg,Zr,Ca)1.8O3, a new ultra-refractory titania mineral from the Allende meteorite: Synchrotron micro-diffraction and EBSD," are John R. Beckett, senior research scientist at Caltech; Oliver Tschauner from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; and Wenjun Liu from the Argonne National Laboratory. The study was supported through grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and NASA's Office of Space Science.

On tape, Sandusky's son Matt talks of sex abuse

In this June 20, 2012 file photo, Matt Sandusky, adopted son of Jerry Sandusky, right, leaves the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa. Just a few hours into deliberations, Thursday, June 22, 2012, Matt Sandusky, came forward for the first time to say in a statement that his father had abused him. The statement didn't detail the abuse allegation. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's son Matt recalled showering with his future adoptive father as a boy and pretending to be asleep to avoid being touched ? memories that surfaced only recently, according to a police interview that details what are the earliest allegations yet of abuse by the former Penn State assistant football coach.

Matt Sandusky, now 33, said the abuse started at age 8, a decade before he was adopted by the once-heralded defensive coordinator, according to the interview, first reported Tuesday by NBC News.

"If you were pretending you were asleep and you were touched or rubbed in some way, you could just act like you were rolling over in your sleep, so that you could change positions," Matt Sandusky said in an excerpt played Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show. His attorneys confirmed the recording's authenticity to The Associated Press.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted last week of 45 counts of abusing 10 boys he met through the charity he founded ? the same organization that introduced him to Matt Sandusky, who became his foster child. Jerry Sandusky's principal lawyer did not return messages Tuesday, and another lawyer said only that Matt Sandusky's allegations contradict testimony he gave to the grand jury whose charges put his father on trial.

Matt Sandusky did not reveal any abuse when he was initially questioned as a grand jury witness but did release a statement alleging past abuse as the jury was sequestered in deliberations last week.

The police interview tapes are the first time Matt Sandusky's allegations of sexual abuse have been publicly aired, and too much time has passed for criminal charges. Asked why he was now coming forward on abuse purported to have occurred as early as the late 1980s, Matt Sandusky told police there were several reasons ? but singled out his family.

"So that they can really have closure and see what the truth actually is. And just to right the wrong, honestly, of going to the grand jury and lying," he said in the police interview.

The AP does not identify people alleging sexual assault without their consent. Matt Sandusky's lawyers named him in a statement released Tuesday to reporters that acknowledged the tapes' validity.

"Although the tape was released without Matt's knowledge or permission, it illustrates that he made the difficult decision to come forward and tell the painful truth to investigators despite extraordinary pressure to support his father," lawyers Justine Andronici and Andrew Shubin wrote.

Jerry Sandusky hasn't been charged with abusing Matt, one of six children adopted by the former coach and his wife, Dottie. Messages left for Sandusky's other children were not returned.

Matt Sandusky sat with Dottie Sandusky on the first day of the trial but left after hearing one of the accusers testify. His attorneys have said he reached out to them while the trial was under way, saying he wanted to talk to prosecutors.

Matt Sandusky said that he was undergoing therapy and that his memories of abuse were only now surfacing. He said on the tapes that he tried to flee Sandusky's house and also attempted suicide.

"I know that I really wanted to die at that point in time," he said.

On the recording, Matt Sandusky says he was sexually abused off and on between ages 8 and 15. While being questioned, he said Jerry Sandusky would blow raspberries on his stomach and touch his genitals. The acts described were similar to accounts relayed by eight accusers who offered graphic testimony on the witness stand.

Those eight accusers said they met Sandusky through The Second Mile, the charity Jerry Sandusky founded for at-risk youth. Matt Sandusky also met his adoptive father through the charity.

Asked whether he recalled engaging in oral sex or being raped by the former Penn State coach, he told police "at this point I don't recall that."

Unless he recovers memory of rape or deviate sexual intercourse, it doesn't appear Jerry Sandusky could still be charged in connection with the allegations by his son.

State Attorney General Linda Kelly said Friday after the verdict that the investigation was continuing. Matt Sandusky's abuse allegations date as far back as the late 1980s, about a decade before the allegations on which Jerry Sandusky was tried.

If the abuse ended by 1995, Matt Sandusky's deadline for pressing criminal charges appears to have expired in 2003 for rape or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and in 2000 for lesser sexual abuse, according to sex-crimes prosecutors.

Until 2002, Pennsylvania law allowed accusers to report the most serious charges of sexual abuse until age 23 and lesser charges until age 20. The law was then changed to give accusers up to age 30 to come forward for rape or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.

The law was extended again in 2007 to age 50 for all sexual abuse claims. But the changes are not retroactive ? meaning Matt Sandusky would not be able to press criminal charges at this point.

On the civil side, Matt Sandusky may have missed his window for seeking damages from Penn State or others.

In Pennsylvania, accusers must now file lawsuits by age 30 in most cases, though exceptions are theoretically possible in the event of concealment or fraud.

"On the face of it, he's too late ... unless there's an exception around it," said lawyer Jeff Anderson, who filed the first lawsuit against Penn State over other Sandusky allegations. His client is not part of the criminal case because he came forward after the charges were filed.

Jerry Sandusky, 68, is under observation at the Centre County jail, where he has been separated from other inmates pending a psychological review to help determine the next step toward his sentencing in about three months. He has steadfastly maintained his innocence.

The son was prepared to testify against his father, lawyers have said. Defense attorney Joe Amendola has said that prosecutors told the defense that if Jerry Sandusky took the stand, Matt Sandusky would have been called as a rebuttal witness.

Another defense attorney, Karl Rominger, told the AP he and Amendola heard the tape before deciding not to put Jerry Sandusky on the stand.

He said that Matt Sandusky, on the tape, makes "allegations that directly contradicts sworn testimony ... directly contradicts police statements he'd given previously, directly contradicts public statements and absolutely contradicts everything his family knows."

Sandusky's arrest in November triggered a scandal at Penn State that led to the ouster of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and the university's president.

The case has shone a national spotlight on the issue of sexual abuse against children. A spokeswoman for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, which describes itself as the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization said Tuesday there has been a 33 percent increase since the trial in the number of people who contacted the group's National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.

Lawsuits Filed Over "One of the Greatest Box Office Flops of All Time"

Any lawsuit that opens by touting a "staggering" fraud on "one of the greatest box office flops of all time" has quite a bit of work to do to live up to such damning words. The investors now suing over the 2009 film Transylmania believe they can make a strong case in describing the horrors.

Forget the fact that of the thousands of films rated for critical consensus by Rotten Tomatoes, less than 10 have a score of "0." Transylmania is one of them. And never mind the fact that when the film opened on 1007 screens in 2009, it had a per screen average of $262 according to Box Office Mojo, which is said to be the worst performance for any wide release ever recorded.

PHOTOS: 18 Outrageous Entertainment Lawsuits

The real question is how is it possible that sane individuals would loan nearly $22 million to the producers of this dud? Witness a lawsuit filed on on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The plaintiffs in the case are Third Eye Capital Corporation and Strative Capital.

The investors are suing various defendants including Hill & Brand Productions and the directing team of David Hillenbrand and Scott Hillenbrand.

According to the complaint, the Hillenbrands began soliciting the plaintiffs to finance the print and advertising costs of Transylmania (aka Dorm Date 3) in 2009. The film was described to them as the first "vampire spoof" in the marketplace that would be successful because of the mania surrounding Twilight. The movie was also held out as poking fun at True Blood, Van Helsing, Dracula and Young Frankenstein.

But the plaintiffs suggest that the film wasn't really a spoof at all -- that it was just a marketing ploy, perhaps one to suck cash.

The Hillenbrands allegedly represented that they had financed the film themselves with an equity base of $5 million. They purportedly came to the negotiating table with market research by Nielsen National Research Group showing audience reviews that were better than that of a studio film with a major star. The brothers also supposedly spoke how the top entertainment law firm of Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp was already "closing" initial P&A, that they were in negotiations with Paramount for library titles (including previous Dorm Date films), that ancillary markets like pay-per-view and video-on-demand were being worked out, that there might be more than $3 million in foreign sales, and that they had assembled a team at First Circle Releasing who would be capable of doing their own domestic distribution for a small "flat" fee instead of a percentage of gross.

Sound too good to be true?

The plaintiffs say they bought into this and, in July 2009, after a meeting in Toronto, agreed to a loan agreement of $11,745,000 to finance P&A, plus an optional $2 million increase, in return for movie revenues going to pay the loan, plus interest and fees, with the library titles being used as collateral.

Then, allegedly came the requests for more money.

In September 2009, the Hillenbrands asked for an additional $2 million, citing competition from another film (Armored), media buy opportunities, and the possibility of "huge" network endorsements.

More requests came, allegedly tied with a focus on the film's "awareness levels." The filmmakers are said to have wanted to achieve a 75 percent awareness level and spoke about plans to have a trailer used on the Zombieland DVD and a "more strategic deal" with Sony Home Entertainment.

That November, the parties allegedly agreed to an Omnibus Amendment, which provided for a $6 million increase in the loan commitment.

In total, during the final six months of 2009, the plaintiffs say they advanced $21,745,000.

The film came out and was savaged by critics. Mike Hale of the New York Times wrote that it was "destined to spend a short and painful life in theatres and then join the ranks of the DVD and late-night-cable undead." Steven Hyden of The Onion said that "Transylmania is such a colossal comedic misfire that it makes the execrable Scary Movie films look like masterworks of Preston Sturges-esque genius by comparison."

The film made less than $400,000 at the box office whereafter the plaintiffs notified the Hillenbrands they were in default due to the material adverse change in their financial standing. The borrowers are said to have resisted, saying that the film would have been successful if the lenders had put up more P&A funds. The lenders got a mere $100,000 on their $22 million investment and say their efforts to do an accounting investigation were frustrated by the hold-back of documents.

Still, the accounting firm hired to do the autopsy of this disaster allegedly turned up evidence of fraud, including that some of the money from the P&A loan went to pay personal credit card bills, traffic tickets, and to friends, family and the Hillenbrands themselves as "loan repayments."

The complaint provides no explicit word of whether the plaintiffs actually saw the film before they agreed to put up more than $22 million. But there's a strong indication that they hadn't. For example, the lawsuit says:

"Ultimately, Lender learned that the Film was not a 'vampire spoof' poking fun at Twilight or True Blood. Despite all of the representations provided to the contrary, the Film had nothing to do with Twilight or True Blood. As such, all of the projections and financial analyses regarding Twilight and past spoof films were pointless."

Might the plaintiffs deserve some blame for not taking a couple hours to actually confirm this for themselves before putting up the money?

Regardless, the plaintiffs are now suing for breach of contract, fraud, negligent misrepresentation and are seeking nearly $22 million in damages and want personal property, compensatory damages and legal fees. They are represented by Ronald Sittler at Blank Rome.

The Hillenbrands couldn't be immediately reached for contact.

Colwill win 3-meter; Viola wins 10-meter at trials

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) ? No matter what happened on the final dive Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais were already bound for London. Chris Colwill didn't have that security.

With his Olympic hopes on the line and a sliver of a lead, Colwill's final dive of the U.S. Olympic trials men's 3-meter springboard finals Sunday was the highest scoring dive of the entire competition.

Colwill rallied from third place to win the men's 3-meter springboard, while Dumais held off Ipsen in the final round to finish second and reach his fourth Olympics in the event.

"Competing in the Olympics that definitely was the biggest pressure, but I felt like I did a good job and enjoy myself and have fun and not worry so much about how the event was going to go and embrace the environment," Colwill said.

The other final on Sunday saw Brittany Viola, daughter of 1988 Cy Young Award winning pitcher Frank Viola, win the women's 10-meter platform in her third attempt to make the Olympics.

Viola dominated the competition winning by nearly 60 points ahead of second place Katie Bell, who claimed the other qualifying spot for the London games. Viola scored 86.40 on her second-round dive, an armstand back dive from the platform with 2 somersaults and 1 1/2 twists, getting all 9s from the judges.

"A greater perspective that this is just another meet," Viola said of her previous trials experiences. "Although there are a lot of lights and colors and Olympic rings everywhere it comes down to the diver and the platform and that's something Katie and I can take into the Olympics."

Colwill was third after the preliminaries and third after the semifinals, positions that would have left him on the outside of Olympics if the final held to form. He entered the finals more than 42 points behind Ispen, but was the best of the trio in the finale. He scored at least 74 points on all six of his dives and qualified for his second Olympics in the event. Colwill finished 12th at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Ipsen and Dumais were already headed to London together as the U.S. representative in the synchronized 3-meter springboard competition. For Dumais, it will be his fourth trip, tying Greg Louganis as the only American men to make four Olympic diving teams.

Entering the final round, the three divers were separated by a mere 2.40 points and all three had their favorite dives for their finale. Colwill scored 99.75, the highest of the competition, on a reverse 3 1/2 somersaults on his final dive that because of a higher degree-of-difficulty than the other two, all but clinched the title.

Dumais moved his signature dive, a forward 2 1/2 somersaults with 2 twists pike, to the final round believing the event could come down to the last dive. The decision was a wise one, with Dumais scoring 91.80 and forcing Ispen to score 93.05 on his final dive to tie. Ipsen's final dive was excellent ? a reverse 1 1/2 with 3 1/2 twists ? but the 91.80 wasn't enough to overcome Duamis' lead for the second Olympic spot.

Ipsen thought initially it was going to be enough.

"I thought I had made it," Ipsen said.

Ipsen led throughout the entire competition until the fifth-round when his reverse 3 1/2 somersaults came up well short and scored just 47.25 points. His entire lead, which had been slightly chipped in to by both Dumais and Colwill, was gone and an audible gasp came from the crowd when the scoreboard showed Ipsen now in third place.

What appeared to be a competition between Colwill and Dumais for the final qualifying spot suddenly became a three-way race for two trips to London.

"I knew this was going to be a nail-biter. I knew it was and that's why I switched my list ... knowing it was going to come down to the last dive," Dumais said. "... I would rather put pressure on a dive that I knew I was capable of doing and luckily it panned out. I knew how to do my last dive."

For Viola, this was her third Olympic trials and she barely missed a trip to Beijing finishing fourth in 2008. She held a comfortable lead going into the finals and never had her Olympic spot threatened. After her 86-point dive in the second round, Viola slipped in the third and fourth rounds, scoring just 43.50 on a back 2 ? somersault pike in the fourth round. But her final dive, a back 2 1/2 somersault pike with 1 1/2 twists, scored 80.00 and clinched the title.

Viola's dad wasn't able to get away from his job as pitching coach for the Savannah Sand Gnats, the New York Mets' Single-A affiliate, to attend the trials, but told his daughter he would be watching on a clubhouse television today and likely not doing much coaching.

"I know that he is watching every moment," Viola said.

Bell, who stands just 4-foot-11, had Haley Ishimatsu right behind her entering the fourth round, but Ishimatsu missed on her dive and scored just 29.70. It gave Bell enough of a comfortable cushion headed to the final round.

"It's unreal," Bell said. "I was nervous. I knew that I needed to be consistent and dive the way that I had been in practice."

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Wildfires moved in on some of Colorado's most popular summer tourist destinations over the weekend, demolishing nearly two dozen homes near Rocky Mountain National Park and emptying hotels and campgrounds at the base of Pikes Peak.

A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles early Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists. On Saturday, a blaze destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park, where many visitors stay while visiting the park.

All of this came just a week before the Fourth of July, a key time for family vacations to national parks and other destinations. A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice of Rock Falls, Ill., who evacuated a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday with her husband, four children and dog. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders. Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this god-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

Plumes of gray and white smoke poured from the mountains Sunday, obscuring at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful." Winds were pushing smoke away from Colorado Springs, but residents and tourists watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Half the nation's firefighting fleet is now battling fires in Colorado, said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting on Monday.

With eight wildfires burning, including a fire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed at least 191 homes near Fort Collins, Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

The wildfire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Carolyn Baty and her husband, Darrell, vacationing from Fort Worth, Texas, were evacuated from their cabin Saturday afternoon.

"I smelled smoke coming from both directions, and then I heard the knock on the door," Darrell Baty told The Denver Post.

A fire burning near Fort Collins has scorched more than 118 square miles, destroying at least 191 homes. Though some evacuees were allowed home Sunday, that blaze has become among the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 12.5-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening 200 homes in four rural subdivisions, forcing 800 people to 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon and is 4 percent contained. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Officials said the fire has blackened at least 1,000 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained, having burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday that containment against the Pecos Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 50 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Deadly Israel raid on Gaza deals blow to truce efforts

The armed wing of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, threatened on Saturday to end a three-day-old Egyptian-brokered truce following a flurry of Israeli air strikes.

"The air raids by the Zionist enemy are new crimes. We will not stay silent in the face of the crimes," a statement from the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades said.

Palestinian medics said two people, including a six-year-old boy, were killed and some 24 wounded in several strikes on the coastal strip overnight and on Saturday.

A strike by an Israeli drone killed a Palestinian man, Khaled al-Burai, 25, east of Jabaliya, in the north of Gaza, a medical source said. Two other Palestinians survived the attack, witnesses said.

A medic said Ali al-Shawaf, aged six, was killed, and his father and another man wounded east of the city of Khan Yunis, but the Israeli military denied it was responsible.

"According to the findings of a preliminary investigation, what happened in Khan Yunis had nothing to do with any operation by the Israeli military," a spokeswoman said.

"The explosion that caused the death of the Palestinian child today was because of ordnance belonging to one of the terror groups," Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, the army's foreign press spokeswoman, said on Twitter.

Witnesses said Israeli aircraft carried out at least four other strikes elsewhere in Gaza on Saturday.

One targeted militants travelling in a car in the Zeitoun neighbourhood east of Gaza City after they had fired rockets into Israel, witnesses said.

Two civilian bystanders suffered minor injuries, they added.

Raids also struck the Beit Lahiya area in the north and the Nusseirat and Al-Bureij refugee camps in the centre of the Gaza Strip, without causing any casualties, witnesses said.

Overnight raids targeted two camps of the Brigades in the centre and north of the territory, and a former Hamas security post in Gaza City. They wounded about 20 people, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Palestinian militants struck back, firing at least 39 rockets into southern Israel, most of them hitting the town of Sderot close to the Gaza border, Israeli officials told AFP, adding that one man was wounded.

The Israeli army said the latest raids were in response to rocket fire earlier in the week.

Israel held Hamas responsible for "all terrorist activity coming from the Gaza Strip," the army statement added.

In its statement, the Qassam Brigades said "nobody will be able to blame our fighters when we respond."

"If our response was not sufficient to get the message through to the enemy, we stand ready to destroy his arrogance, stop his crimes and respond to his aggression," Saturday's statement said.

On Friday, medics in the Gaza Strip reported that two Palestinians had been killed and four wounded when Israeli warplanes struck twice.

An army spokeswoman said that five of the 39 rockets fired into Israel on Saturday were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system, while 16 fell into the sea or fell short and landed within the Gaza Strip.

"Eighteen rockets exploded this morning in southern Israel, 16 of them in the town of Sderot," the spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said one Israeli was wounded when a rocket hit a building in Sderot.

The violence came despite the tenuous truce between Israel and Hamas. It was announced late on Wednesday by the Brigades after a flurry of deadly exchanges in and around the territory.

The latest round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air strikes Monday morning, just hours after gunmen from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Since then 14 Palestinians have been killed and dozens wounded in Israeli strikes, while at least 150 rockets and mortar shells have have hit Israel, wounding five people, among them four border police officers.

Israel has said its sudden spike in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the Sinai border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting militants about to attack the Jewish state.

Gaylord Hotels, a pioneer in the hotel and convention industry with a collection of five award-winning resort and convention centers across the U.S., was looking for a cost-efficient solution that would enable it to provide more attentive and personalized service to its guests. The hotels offered poolside service and with acres of pool area to cover, servers spent a lot of time walking between the pools, bar, and kitchen to enter and check on orders, and process payments. This resulted in long wait times and had a negative impact on sales and customer satisfaction.

Daily Systems teamed up with SkyWire Media to provide a wireless POS solution based on the Instant Guest Response software. The solution has all the features of a stationary POS system but fits in the palm of a hand. The mobile POS device is fully integrated with Gaylord?s existing POS system, enabling real-time tracking of the orders and open checks. The servers use the iPod touch in combination with Daily Systems? iAPS sled, which is a unique all-in-one solution with a bar code scanner, credit card reader, smart card reader, and receipt printer.

?The poolside ordering and payment solution significantly enhances the productivity of the servers, and guests spend less time waiting,? says Thomas Castleberry, COO at SkyWire Media. ?The cutting-edge mobile POS solution is also a factor in creating the impression that the Gaylord Hotels is a technologically savvy and modern company.?

?In today?s business, time is money,? says Rene Oliver, CEO and President of Daily Systems. ?The iAPS Sled mobile POS device enables businesses to provide more timely, accurate and better overall customer service.?

A lot of people these days don?t think of gold among the choices for a retirement plan. Many assume that a retirement plan only need to be in the mode of money and common investing plans. They simply don?t have any idea about what we call retirement gold. They do not have any inkling that gold could be a great investment for retirement.

So why make an investment in gold retirement?

The biggest reason is that gold is an actual asset. The second is because it is its own store of value.

In the past, the dollar was determined by the worth of gold. It was called the gold standard. Currently, things are very different. The dollar isn?t anymore dependent on gold. The US money is now simply paper, the value of it being based upon the dictates of the administration as well as the economic situations. Yet gold still has its worth in itself.

Gold is a hard asset. You may hold it in contrast to stocks and shares. It is possible to keep it by yourself unlike stocks and shares. If you make an investment in stocks and shares, you will know this. When the stock market crashed, the traders forfeited all they had invested in. Yet gold nonetheless has its own worth in itself.

Essential matter: Gold is actually more reliable than dollars, stocks, bonds, and sometimes, even real estate investment.

What about inflation?

Retired people are often susceptible to inflation. The very same dollars that they worked hard for 20 years ago has lost much of its value now!

Great news! There are numerous instances when gold improved while the dollar reduced in worth. The rising cost of living helps make the monetary value of gold actually higher? in part due to the erosion of the dollar?s value.

But be warned. Just like a number of other assets, gold?s value likewise fluctuates.

The prices for gold will be different every once in awhile, occasionally, gold will be worth some dough and some other times, it will be worth 10 times more than what was bought it for. Once the costs are good to get gold, it?ll be wise to check into this investment option. However, it?s exactly the same with regards to trying to sell the gold in the future because the rates will vary and the prices will be better as compared to other instances.

What amount must you invest in the retirement gold plan?

This is a simple solution. The most common advice for everyone, this includes retirees, is to get twenty to thirty percent of your assets in gold.

One thing is important to understand, gold is a wonderful asset choice for the long run for retirement. It may even have a good pay off and might lead to an early retirement! It just depends upon the circumstances. It really is worth everybody?s effort to think about making an investment in a retirement gold program.
