Murdoch empire faces new scandal, potentially far more damaging

Three major reports this week detail an alleged satellite TV hacking scandal by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp that reportedly cost its rivals tens of millions of dollars.

A series of investigative reports by journalists around the globe have put Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation at the center of a new hacking scandal. If proven true, the allegations could be far more devastating than the scandal that brought an end to the News of the World newspaper last year, since this one strikes at the financial heart of Mr. Murdoch's empire: News Corp's valuable television holdings.

The Australian Financial Review wrote in a March 28 report that News Corp cost its TV rivals tens of millions of dollars by "promoting" hackers' efforts to give customers unauthorized, cheaper access to its rivals' broadcasting. The AFR, Australia's biggest financial newspaper, writes that "the piracy cost the Australian pay TV companies up to $50 million a year and helped cripple the finances of Austar," a rival satellite TV company.

The AFR's March 28 report, which was based on a four-year investigation, was published just two days after a similar report by BBC News program Panorama. The BBC report said that according to a British hacker, a former News Corp subsidiary leaked information about how to hack into the software of rival satellite TV provider ONdigital, devastating ONdigital's business in Britain. And the Independent reported earlier this week on similar accusations by an Italian hacker regarding Nagra France, another satellite TV provider operating in Italy.

News Corp have denied allegations of wrongdoing, and indicated that it was preparing a legal challenge against the AFR and other news outlets reporting on the TV hacking. Mr. Murdoch dismissed the reports as "lies and libels" on Twitter.

Even if the allegations are proven to be true, however, Murdoch's rivals may not have any legal recourse against NDS and News Corp, since digital laws were still in embryo when the alleged hacking took place.

The phone-hacking scandal that embroiled News Corp's British newspaper holdings last year was a relatively low-tech enterprise, involving stolen passwords and simple tricks. But the alleged TV hacking is at an entirely different level.

Mega Millions jackpot hits $540 million, still rising

Seven-time Florida lottery winner, Richard Lustig offers tips to winning the $500 million dollar jackpot.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The Mega Millions lottery hit $540 million on Thursday, and people endured long lines for a chance at winning the hefty jackpot ? an amount that could rise as more tickets are sold for Friday?s drawing.

?I have never seen so many people inside one store,? Jessie Rae Vaglivielo, a clerk at Hallelujah Junction, a one-stop gas and convenience store?in Honey Lake, Calif., near the Nevada border, told msnbc.com on Thursday. It was the California woman?s fifth day on the job and she didn?t have time to talk -- she was selling tickets to dozens of people who had lined up.

Vaglivielo laughed when asked if she was going to buy a ticket. "No, I don't play," she said, adding "but there are a lot of people here who do, and I gotta go."

Nobody matched all six numbers in Tuesday's regular draw, and the total jackpot has been growing since. With a $540 million total, the lump sum payment is estimated at $389.8 million, according to lottery officials.

Mega Millions is is played in 42 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Players pay $1 for a ticket and must pick five numbers from 1 to 56 plus a Mega number from 1 to 46 to win the jackpot. The odds of winning are 1 in about 176 million, according to the official Mega Millions website.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won was $390 million in March 2007, when the prize was split between two tickets sold in Georgia and New Jersey.

The pot has grown massively since the last winner on Jan. 24?won $72 million.

JetBlue pilot's outburst: Could side effects from medications be at fault?

Federal investigators and JetBlue officials poring over Clayton Osbon's medical records are expected to look for clues as to whether medications, or their side effects, might be an issue.

Side effects from sleep and antidepressant medications ? or perhaps even a nutritional supplement ? are possible areas of investigation as officials probe the mystery of a JetBlue pilot's erratic behavior aboard a flight Tuesday, medical experts say.

Clayton Osbon, who was charged Wednesday with interfering with a flight crew, a felony, reportedly ran up and down the aisle of the plane shouting about Al Qaeda and declaring the plane was going down, even as passengers struggled to restrain him.

The co-pilot landed the Las Vegas-bound flight safely in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Osbon was taken, strapped to a stretcher, to a local medical facility and later charged.

Yet the 12-year JetBlue captain had been, prior to this episode, a man whom the company's CEO called a ?consummate professional,? rising within JetBlue's ranks to become an exemplary "flight standards captain." Osbon has been reported by news outlets to have been an even-tempered man on good terms with his neighbors and hobby pilot buddies in his hometown of Richmond Hill, Ga.

So what might have stirred this emotional tornado ? described as a "medical situation" by JetBlue officials ? emerge?

Federal investigators and JetBlue officials poring over Osbon's medical records are expected to look for clues as to whether medications, or their side effects, might be an issue in the case, or whether the incident is attributable to a rare case of psychosis or other mental aberration not previously diagnosed.

Experts unconnected with the investigation say several pharmacological issues under scrutiny within the airline industry are likely to get attention in the Osbon case, including the side effects of medicines that pilots sometimes use to fight fatigue and depression.

Was Osbon, for instance, among those pilots newly permitted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to use one of four specific antidepression medications, whose potential side effects are known to include hallucination and panic attacks?

Use of antidepressants had long been considered cause for grounding a commercial pilot. That changed in April 2010, when the FAA announced it would begin to issue medical certificates, or waivers, on a case-by-case basis to "pilots taking medication for mild to moderate depression." Now, pilots taking Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, or Lexapro under doctors? orders are allowed to fly if they have had successful treatment for 12 months.

"He might have a psychosis or some other underlying illness," says Russell Rayman, a board-certified specialist in aerospace medicine and a former director of the Aerospace Medical Association in Alexandria, Va., an organization of physicians and scientists that conducts research on medicine and the aerospace industry.

"But there's also the possibility that [Osbon] had a reaction to some medication he was taking as a prescription ? or even something he just bought in the drugstore," Dr. Rayman speculates. "All three possibilities have to be investigated. Certainly some medications could trigger a bizarre reaction."

The FAA requires pilots under age 40 to receive physical examinations once a year. Pilots 40 and over must have exams twice a year. As part of the checkup, they must submit all medications they are taking or that have been prescribed by doctors.

Medications related to sleeping problems could have been an issue in this case, some aerospace medical experts say. Osbon typically flew jets out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. He roomed with several other pilots in a small apartment, according to news reports. With fragmented, often-changing schedules, many pilots develop problems sleeping.

Half of all airline pilots "rarely or never get a good night's sleep on work nights," according to a survey released earlier this month by the National Sleep Foundation, an Arlington, Va., organization of health professionals who study the issue.

Last year, the National Transportation Safety Board, responding to a fatal 2008 charter-jet crash in Minnesota, called for changes in rules dealing with how airline pilots deal with fatigue. Failure of pilots to get a good night's rest, undiagnosed sleep disorders, and unauthorized sleep medications were cited in the case.

If a pilot is prescribed a sleeping medication for regular use, it?s possible the FAA might not recertify him to fly at his next physical exam, some medical experts note.

Medications "for sleep ? they all have psychiatric overhangs," says one senior medical expert with knowledge of federal aviation requirements who requested anonymity. "The FAA won't permit the use of sleep medications because the parade of sleepwalking and crazy things happening the next day is just unbelievable."

Instead, the expert says, the agency has tried to address this by changing the work rules. In 2014, the FAA will require 10 hours of rest (up from eight hours currently) between flight duties, with at least eight hours of sleep.

Another problem is that pilots sometimes "self-medicate" to sleep better, some say. And they may not report that.

"I don't think we really know to what extent pilots are self-medicating for sleep problems because of ?the fear of FAA regulations prohibiting sleep medications," says Sanjay Patel, a specialist in sleep medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a researcher at Harvard Medical School. "If anything, pilots are more likely to be undertreating insomnia for fear of the FAA restrictions."

Dr. Patel adds, ?It would be very rare for something like [the Osbon case] to happen [because of reactions to sleep medications], but you can't completely rule it out without looking for evidence of drug in the person's system."

Finally, there is the question of nutritional supplements. According to his Twitter account, Osbon, in his spare time, was moonlighting as a "regional director" to help market a nutritional supplement aimed at weight loss. Could he have been affected by it?

"There's so much we just don't know," Rayman says. "People walk into a drugstore and buy what they want ? they're self-medicating. Any of those medications could trigger a bizarre reaction in conflict with one another. And we don't know what kind of dietary supplements he was using, if any. It's something that needs to be checked."

Meditation Improves Emotional Behaviors in Teachers ... - Health.am

? Neurology ? Mar 29, 2012

Schoolteachers who underwent a short but intensive program of meditation were less depressed, anxious or stressed ? and more compassionate and aware of others? feelings, according to a UCSF-led study that blended ancient meditation practices with the most current scientific methods for regulating emotions.

A core feature of many religions, meditation is practiced by tens of millions around the world as part of their spiritual beliefs as well as to alleviate psychological problems, improve self-awareness and to clear the mind. Previous research has linked meditation to positive changes in blood pressure, metabolism and pain, but less is known about the specific emotional changes that result from the practice.

The new study was designed to create new techniques to reduce destructive emotions while improving social and emotional behavior.

The study will be published in the April issue of the journal Emotion.

?The findings suggest that increased awareness of mental processes can influence emotional behavior,? said lead author Margaret Kemeny, PhD, director of the Health Psychology Program in UCSF?s Department of Psychiatry. ?The study is particularly important because opportunities for reflection and contemplation seem to be fading in our fast-paced, technology-driven culture.?

Altogether, 82 female schoolteachers between the ages of 25 and 60 participated in the project. Teachers were chosen because their work is stressful and because the meditation skills they learned could be immediately useful to their daily lives, possibly trickling down to benefit their students.

Job Stress in Teachers Linked to Student Achievement
?Teaching is a highly stressful occupation,? Teresa McIntyre, a research professor from University of Houston said. ?Teacher stress affects various aspects of teacher health and may influence how effective teachers are in the classroom, with potential consequences for their students? behavior and learning.

?I started to research the literature on stress and teachers in the U.S. and found very little information. There was no comprehensive study of teachers? stress or even an audit of the percentage of teachers who are stressed. I saw a void here and a need to study.?

McIntyre serves as primary investigator for a $1.6 million grant funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education, titled, ?Using Longitudinal and Momentary Analysis to Study the Impact of Middle School Teachers? Stress on Teacher Effectiveness, Student Behavior and Achievement.?

The research study starts at the beginning of this coming school year and follows 200 seventh-and eighth-grade social studies, science or math teachers in 20 middle schools in H.I.S.D. and thousands of students over a three-year period. The research team intends to identify predictors and outcomes of job stress in middle school teachers, linking teacher stress to student behavior and achievement via teacher effectiveness. The results of the data can be used to guide further development of interventions to mitigate teacher stress and, consequently, improve teacher effectiveness and student behavior and learning.

Study Arose After Meeting Dalai Lama

The study arose from a meeting in 2000 between Buddhist scholars, behavioral scientists and emotion experts at the home of the Dalai Lama. There, the Dalai Lama and Paul Ekman, PhD, a UCSF emeritus professor and world expert in emotions, pondered the topic of emotions, leading the Dalai Lama to pose a question: In the modern world, would a secular version of Buddhist contemplation reduce harmful emotions?

From that, Ekman and Buddhist scholar Alan Wallace developed a 42-hour, eight-week training program, integrating secular meditation practices with techniques learned from the scientific study of emotion. It incorporated three categories of meditative practice:

* Concentration practices involving sustained, focused attention on a specific mental or sensory experience;
* Mindfulness practices involving the close examination of one?s body and feelings;
* Directive practices designed to promote empathy and compassion toward others.

In the randomized, controlled trial, the schoolteachers learned to better understand the relationship between emotion and cognition, and to better recognize emotions in others and their own emotional patterns so they could better resolve difficult problems in their relationships. All the teachers were new to meditation and all were involved in an intimate relationship.

?We wanted to test whether the intervention affected both personal well-being as well as behavior that would affect the well-being of their intimate partners,? said Kemeny.

As a test, the teachers and their partners underwent a ?marital interaction? task measuring minute changes in facial expression while they attempted to resolve a problem in their relationship. In this type of encounter, those who express certain negative facial expressions are more likely to divorce, research has shown.

The Social Customer #SCRM12 | Our Social Times

Today we?re joined of the Our Social Times blog by Barry Furby who is Live Blogging at our ?The Social Customer? Conference at Prospero House. The event has a fantastic line up of speakers offering invaluable insights into the future of customer service and social media marketing. It will also highlight innovative customer engagement and social CRM strategies and techniques.

Barry be adding notes into the article below throughout the day? and follow the #SCRM12 hashtag for tweets!

The Rise of the Social Customer
Guy Stephens ? Technology Consultant, CapGemini

The rise of the Social Business, its a approach and culture that needs to be adopted, The Cluetrain Manifesto is a must read book if you?re going to attempt it. Guy Stephens explains how social media has been adopted by consumers and how this is changing their relationship with companies. Citing examples of how businesses are changing and adapting their internal structures and processes to enhance their services and meet customer expectations. Making your business Customer Centric is not about technology, but about a cultural shift in the business, this culture and approach will lead you to implement Social technology, but it must follow the shift?

Nice point: ?Before you make these changes for Social Business, ignore the technology, look at objectives for the business first? #scrm12

We?d make a huge step forward if we apply the Conversation Prism to Customer Service rather than just marketing #scrm12

How Marketing & Customer Service Can Work Together

Martin Hill-Wilson, Director, Brainfood Consulting

Businesses have a huge disconnect between departments, we still operate in silo?s despite working so hard (well at least talking so hard) for so long? We can only get get over this when we finally work as a business, together, with a single agenda. Are we finally over the bad old days of over promising and under servicing customers? When Marketing and Customer Service fail in this way, the value of customer engagement is lost. Why do we manage these two closely aligned activities separately? What does effective collaboration look like? And, can it really happen? Customer Centric might even allow the business to empower its customer to become a voice in the customer service department ? Consumer Managed Q&A forums?

Panel Discussion: Who Should ?Own? Social?
Moderator ? Neville Hobson (Communications Consultant), Katy Howell (Managing Director, Immediate Future), Nick Sharples (Corporate Communications Consultant), Martin Hill-Wilson (Brainfood Consulting), Aaron Stewart (Product Marketing Manager, KANA Software)

Moderated by Neville, the discussion floats around the topic of who owns Social. No single person in a business, or no single department should own Social, it should be a communication and engagement channel throughout the company. The higher you are in business the more you experience disconnect, a CEO may provide guidance of strategy, but every customer touchpoint can be empowered to use Social. In most organisations, Marketing has led the way in social media adoption and usage. Some would say, though, that ?social? is more attuned to the goals of Customer Services ? in which a focus on generating trust and delivering value is not polluted by a requirement to generate leads. I think the answer to the discussion results similar to a comment Neville experienced on his blog, We?re asking the wrong question! But there should be a department that take lead to pass things through the companies eco-system ? is this the Social Media command centre?

Social media needs someone to ?Lead? it not ?Own? it within an organisation says @nicksharples1 #scrm12 #custserv

Customers don?t own ur social media they inform it. Do you know ur customer journey via @katyhowell #scrm12

Insight is great, but it?s useless unless it is actionable, the business still needs the attitude & culture to make things happen #scrm12

Control never really there, a construct that orgs lulled their customers/themselves into believing. Customers finally waking up! #scrm12

Everything Everywhere Case Study: Leveraging Social Customer Service to increase Customer Loyalty
Ben Kay ? Head of Digital Strategy and Adoption, Everything Everywhere

A practical case study about the work of TMobile/Orange. Customers made 1.33Bn Calls, 5.5Bn Texts and used 326Bn Kilobytes of Data, they use the data services rather than a call even to ask about Customer Service problems. Listen, Listen, Listen and keep Listening. Everything Everywhere wanted to find out about the brand conversation ? who, why, where. Then look at how to we manage this? Ben has an interesting and rather conflicting statement to bust the myth of reducing calls ? he says when you have 27 million customers the phone will always ring, maybe we can marginally shift this. We enjoyed a rather honest and critical look at how and why Everything Everywhere participate in Social.

How do customers seek service? 77% search, 71% go to company site, 48% read reviews, 13% use social networks (Mintel) @Benjamin_Kay #scrm12

Some Orange/TMobile stats: Customers made 1.33Bn Calls, 5.5Bn Texts and used 326Bn Kilobytes of Data #SCRM12 << All about the data?!

Panel Discussion: Measuring the Value and Effectiveness of Customer Communities
Moderator ? Luke Brynley-Jones (Our Social Times), Bian Salins (Head of Social Media Innovation, BT Customer Service), Vincent Boon (Community Manager, GiffGaff/Telefonica), Guy Stephens (Cap Gemini)

Value and Effectiveness is one of those metrics that is hard to quantify. We look at cost reduction, renewals (sales), sentiment, net promoter scores etc. Customers are increasingly being asked to resolve their problems through interaction in communities, but do these really work? How can companies measure the effectiveness of their customer communities and what techniques can be used to ensure that knowledge is effectively shared and stored, that problems are resolved and that customer satisfaction levels are maintained? GiffGaff have achieved 85% of support successfully by use of Social and Web support. Again, clarification that Customer Services starts at Google? Your customer know so much about your products, more than you might yourself as a business. Bian almost wins quote of the day with ?I?ve leant more from customers than anyone In the business?.

Giffgaff originally started in social to reduce customer service costs. It has since evolved into a way of living! #scrm12

Frustrated community customers can end up being your brand ambassadors by getting the answers they need and being satisfied #scrm12

#scrm12 ?I?ve leant more from customers than anyone In the business?. Great quote from Bian Salins

The Future of Social Customer
Frank Eliason ? VP Social Media, Citi

We?re joined by Frank via Webinar (phew, the internet worked!), he?s the voice behind @ComcastCares he successfully demonstrated that social media could enable a large corporation to build genuine relationships with their customers. At Citi he says he is focused on ?building a lifetime of trust? between the bank and its customers. In this live video presentation Frank offers his insights into how large organisations should approach social customer engagement. In his whitty manner Frank talks us through the traditional process of customer complaints, it?s tough business. Social Media allows consumers to enthusiastically complain in a public domain, we?re connecting with frustration in a public environment so it has become a priority we need to tackle. Business want Social Service, Consumers want the product to work. For 20 years call centers have slowly become huge cost centers, and therefore sales centres ? consumer do not want to be sold to in this environment, but it happens ? these are key things to think about in Social Service. Social Media brings out Passion, so driving change in a brand that witnesses bad sentiment online can quickly turn it round and those same people that are passionate will continue to show their now positive passion. Start using a smart social listening program to drive change in your business and what you?ll find that you?ll dramatically reduce the need for Customer Service across the business regardless of if you participate in Social ? look at Apple.

Everything about the call centre is about getting you off the phone via @frankeliason #scrm12

?CE (Customer experience) + P (Passion) = Social Media Success? > Formula by @askciti #SCRM12

Business want Social Service, Consumers want the product to work #SCRM12

British Gas Case Study: Implementing a Cohesive Strategy for Customer Engagement
Lloyd Salmons, Managing Director, Outside Line and Laura Price ? Social Media Manager, British Gas

In this co-presented session British Gas and agency, Outside Line, explain how they employ social media to generate conversation and social currency around their brand. They demonstrate how they brought together different platforms and teams to create one cohesive strategy, how they have tackled internal and external challenges, and how they use social media to try to mitigate negative sentiment, so prominent in the energy industry. The challenge was to create a eco-system of positive sentiment and perception around the brand, so that the customer journey through to support was one that was reinforced with positive messages about the brand. This calls back to the message from earlier talks where we discussed the customer journey starting more than often in Search, the first steps in this journey are just as important as the interactions later in the process whether they?re call center of socially enabled. British Gas have quantified each view of support YouTube videos to an ?80 saving (call time, home visits, parts). There is a huge process of learning to interact with customer via different means of technology.

Half of British gas mentions every day are #custserv issues. #scrm12

Integrating Social Media into Traditional Customer Services
Carolyn Blunt ? People Development Consultant, Real Results

So how did we get here? Hear Carolyn Blunt explains how customer services has been organised, trained and managed for the past 10 years and how social media is starting to impact on it. She explores what this shift means and what can be done to stay ahead of the curve, to maintain and improve the customer experience and to keep staff working confidently and efficiently. The shift in Social Contact Centers represents a huge cultural change for the providers to the industry, they?re fighting for ownership of a platform and technology with the marketing folks. Its becoming a case of be pro-active or die. Goldern Rules: 1) Consistence across channels (Social and Calls) 2) Never Argue with customers 3) Avoid the Chardonnay Tweeters. Creating a sub-team for the Social task force is a great idea, look at Twitter / Facebook but also we?re seeing the rise of the forums.

Carolyn Blunt is gen X and still wants to phone. Give your customer choice in how they want to converse with you #scrm12

Three responses to social customer, passive, pounce or proactive. Latter is best says @CarolynBlunt #scrm12

Implementing Multi-Channel Social Customer Services
Richard McCrossan (Strategic Business Director , Genesys)

Richard is a huge advocate of Customer Service, ultimately we need to give our customers options. The do not necessarily want to develop a relationship with your brand, they want a good product and they want to quickly resolve any problems in a quick and efficient manner. Customer Service isnt a huge factor in Customer Loyalty, but it?s a major factor in Customer Dis-Loyalty. When we have identified a problem we need to leverage customer service tools, identify the relationship you have with that consumer, deal with the issue there or take it offline, then close the loop.

Being able to empower customer service to move between social and phone can be very powerful #scrm12

Instant messaging or ?Live Chat? customer satisfaction ratings much higher than traditional mediums such as the telephone #scrm12

Customers don?t want a relationship with an organisation, they want the benefits of it via @dossan #scrm12

Panel Discussion: Does Social Customer Service Improve the User Experience?
Moderator ? Maria McCann (Head of Customer Services, Spotify), Dominic Sparkes (Managing Director, Tempero), Amanda Brown (PR Manager, First Direct), David Hughes (Director of User Experience Expedia Affiliate Network), Charlotte Garfield (ACCA).

Nicely put together wrap up of the day. If we took a step back to no Social, would the world be a better place. Consensus on the panel is that we?re enjoying the changing market, brands enjoy the advocacy gained through social and as volumes grow for major brand divertative measures such as social media are ultimately making things possible. Predictions: Sentiment aware websites, faster product development, Mobile Customer Service.

@domsparkes ?Social media can make customer service unfair?watch what u put on trip advisor if you are still in the hotel?? #scrm12

Movie review: Let the 'Games' begin! | UWIRE

Posted on29 March 2012.

Gary Ross? portrayal of The Hunger Gamesmore closely resembles the book than the $90 million hype machine it has become.

The story follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen through her time competing in the 74th annual Hunger Games, a competition which selects one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts of post-apocalyptic North America, now called Panem, to fight to the death on television.

Created after a rebellion against the governing Capitol, the Hunger Games were designed to show the districts they are powerless against the Capitol and cannot rise up again.

Employing superb camera work and an outstanding script adaptation, the filmmakers take on this dystopian and disturbing tale with alacrity, translating a complex page-turner into a similarly gripping on-screen story.

Cramming a 374-page book into two and a half hours for a big-budget Hollywood movie seemed destined to result in a heinous flop. But Ross rises to the occasion, perfectly conveying all of the necessary plot information. Instead of having to rely on awkward on-screen introductory speeches or the whispered explanations of fellow audience members, viewers who have not read the books will instantly understand from the title slides at the beginning and by piecing together the dialogue.

Ross? artistic abilities have earned him an Oscar nomination before for both directing and writing, and they make The Hunger Games truly amazing. His minimalistic film techniques allow the script and acting to take hold of the audience without distraction or interruption.

Despite the stacked cast, which includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland, the story at the heart of The Hunger Games is the real reason for the film?s box-office success.

The midnight showings of the movie brought in $19.7 million, which is the all-time first night record for a non-sequel, and the seventh-highest grossing midnight screening ever behind three Harry Potter movies and three Twilight films.

Suzanne Collins wrote an amazingly gripping story, which Gary Ross brought to life in the woods of North Carolina.

To find such success, however, having an Academy Award-nominated actress in the lead can only help. Lawrence fully embodies heroine Katniss Everdeen in yet another brilliant performance. Lawrence and the rest of the cast bring the characters to life so powerfully I cannot imagine the movie any other way.

The story and the violence are troubling and aggressive, but because the movie is made the way it is, this world seems realistic.

While movie and book fans will debate the various merits and flaws of the widely popular Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games franchises until the cows come home, Ross? film dwarfs all of the others, at least from an objective film-making standpoint.

The media has drawn unwarranted comparisons between The Hunger Games and the terrible Twilight saga by focusing far too much on Katniss and the love triangle which springs up around her as the Games story proceeds. This romantic element has little bearing on this first film, however, which deals largely with courage and the power of family and friendship, rather than with wishy-washy teenage love affairs.

This movie has a lot to offer for fans of the books, fans of the actors, fans of Ross and newcomers who know nothing of the story or phenomenon. Simply put, The Hunger Games is victorious on every level.

Adventure Travels -Where You Can Find the Best Experiences ...

Instead of the normal vacation where you do nothing more than the boring fundamental things; mix it up a little and do something amazing. Even though you may like the normal sort of travel and vacation; you do need to understand that there are all sorts of unusual things to do that are just as, if not more, satisfying. We will be offering some suggestions on ways to make your next vacation an adventure. An African safari is quite intriguing because you are able to visit wildlife in their environment; instead of a zoo or on the TV. Doing the groundwork for a visit to Africa takes a little extra work due to the various things that need to be addressed, like your passport or visas; not to mention any health issues that need to be taken care of.

A desert trip on the back of camels is a type of adventure travel that can also be relaxing and meditative. The vast size and openness of the desert create an appearance much like the ocean and helps deliver a soothing outlook. Visualize a trip through the desert on the back of a camel, the same mode of transportation the nomads used forever; then as night descends, you snuggle up under the stars. You may opt for a comparable trip in Mongolia atop a horse. This is a region where the folks that live there do not necessarily change with the times. Taking such a trek can give you a whole new experience of life, even if it?s only for a week.

When you decide on taking a more extreme vacation; the groundwork will be a lot more intense than with the usual vacation planning. Depending on where you are planning on going; the requirements may be more demanding when it comes to adjusting to the time of year or the gear needed for an enjoyable endeavor. If your exciting adventure involves visiting another country, you would be wise to get your visa in order well ahead of time.

In some cases, you may need vaccinations or health related preparations. If your travel package does not include a guide; you should take care of those arrangements before your trip. When the dialect is exotic or the area you are in is unfamiliar to you; a guide would be a great idea. It would be a good idea to design your trip plans well before your departure.

When it comes to choosing an adventure vacation; we all have our distinctive preferences. Your choice may hinge on what kind of area you want for your final destination and what type of adventure sport you find exhilarating. You can find adventures in water, on mountains or in the desert. The tools needed for some of these adventure vacations can range from specialized stuff to a basic pair of walking shoes. It is uplifting when you are able to escape from your daily schedule and visit some exotic place for a vacation.

Are you merely a weekend warrior when it comes to Adventure Travels? If you really are serious ? then read this briefing to learn all the problems you want to avoid if you ever hope to Adventure Travels. Do not neglect travel clothing questions, either.

Ancient stone monolith likely marked seasons

An ancient stone monolith in England was likely an astronomical marker, according to new archaeological evidence.

The 4,000-year-old stone is triangular in shape and angles up toward geographic south. Its orientation and slant angle are aligned with the altitude of the sun at midsummer, researchers said.

And new evidence shows that there are packing stones around the base of the 7.2-foot tall (2.2-meter) monolith, indicating that it was placed carefully in its location and position, they added.

"Given the sensitivity of the site, we can't probe under the surface of the soil," astronomer Daniel Brown of Nottingham Trent University in England said in a statement. "However, through our survey, we have found a higher density of packing stones on one side, supporting the case that the stone has been orientated intentionally."

The monolith is located at a ridge called Gardom's Edge in the Peak District National Park near Manchester, an area that shows evidence of human occupation extending far back though its history. Other ancient monuments such as Bronze Age roundhouses and a late Neolithic enclosure have been found nearby.

The seemingly astronomical monolith is thought to have been erected by Neolithic people around 2000 B.C.

"The stone would have been an ideal marker for a social arena for seasonal gatherings," Brown said. "It's not a sundial in the sense that people would have used it to determine an exact time. We think that it was set in position to give a symbolic meaning to its location, a bit like the way that some religious buildings are aligned in a specific direction for symbolic reasons."

The researchers used a 3-D computer model to analyze how the stone would have been illuminated throughout the different seasons four millennia ago, given that the tilt of Earth's axis has changed over time.

Their model showed that the slanted side of the stone would remain in permanent shadow during the winter, while it would have been illuminated only in the morning and afternoon during most of the summer. At midsummer, the sun would have lit the stone brightly all day.

"The use of shadow casting in monuments of this period is quite rare in the British Isles," Brown said. "But there are some examples including New Grange, Ireland, and some Clava cairns in the north-east of Scotland that have been proposed to include the intentional use of shadows. Both are associated to burial sites using the symbolism of a cyclic light and shadow display to represent eternity. Given the proximity of the Neolithic enclosure and possible ritual importance of this site, the Gardom's Edge monolith could be another such example."

Brown will present his findings Tuesday at the National Astronomy Meeting in Manchester, England.

Coeli Carr: The Deep Blue Sea: Singin' in the Pain With Jo Stafford

Nothing reinforces female yearning for romance and the perfect man like a plaintive song trilled by a woman. In The Deep Blue Sea, director Terence Davies calls on Jo Stafford to hit it out of the ballpark.
2012-03-23-deepblueseaprofilesmall.jpg
It's 1950 in London where Hester (Rachel Weisz) has ditched her passionless marriage to an older magistrate (Simon Russell Beale) who idolizes her. She's replaced him with the younger, damaged and far less stable Freddie (Tom Hiddleston). Things will not go well.

How do we know?

Aside from Hester's despair, the proof is the great and glorious voice of Jo Stafford, belting out "You Belong to Me" -- the much covered classic with this visually iconic opening verse: "See the pyramids across the Nile, watch the sunrise on a tropic isle."

One of this country's leading pop and jazz vocalists in the post-WWII era and throughout the '50s, Stafford actually released her version of the song in 1952. But given its impact in this movie, the two-year discrepancy is forgivable.

The song's most telling lyrics are these: "I'll be so alone without you, maybe you'll be lonesome too." I suspect a movie audience of women with a 21st-century mindset (think Beyonc?'s "Single Ladies") will ridicule Hester's emotional torment.

Taking the mindset back a few decades -- to see how the penchant for yearning-in-song marked '50s women like a knife -- may help.

"In the '50s, longing was a classic theme, articulated, most often, by women," says Glenn C. Altschuler, a professor of American Studies at Cornell University and author of All Shook Up: How Rock 'n' Roll Changed America. "It speaks to a fundamental issue -- the tension between being themselves and subordinating part of themselves to a man and a relationship. The assertion of this longing happened in song, literature and film -- everywhere in pop culture."

Of course, these obsessions hit youth -- immature adults also qualify -- the hardest. "The subject matter of 'You Belong to Me' is about looking for something that will last," says John Beebe, a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst in private practice in San Francisco. "In the inner world, you've got that adolescent dream -- no matter what age you are -- that one's love will be reciprocated forever. But in the outer world, you're headed for disaster if you truly believe that these expectations will be met."

Hester, as Beebe aptly puts it, "seems to be in a double bind, longing for an identity and life she can't have."

Another way to look at the song's relevance within the movie, says Beebe, is by seeing the lyrics as representing our inner relationship to ourselves. The lyrics that remind the lover to be faithful, no matter where on the globe he finds himself, could also suggest the need to be true to oneself, he says.

But they also uncannily reflect the fact that Hester is the one who has cheated on her husband.

"Stafford's timeless archetypal voice is all about cool objectivity, the eternity of emotions and a search for something long-lasting," says Beebe, author of Integrity in Depth and co-author of The Presence of the Feminine in Film. "The song is an assertion of the wish to experience our own integrity and the right to be true to one's self."

In her search for passionate sex -- and acting on it with Freddie -- Hester did turn suicidal. Yet, in her own mind, she just might have won, after all.

The leading national organization opposing same-sex marriage has sought to split the Democratic Party base by pitting African-Americans and Hispanics against gay-rights groups, according to confidential strategy memos made public by court officials in Maine.

"The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks ? two key Democratic constituencies," says one of the memos. It also suggests "interrupting" the process of cultural assimilation for Hispanics in hopes of curtailing support for same-sex marriage.

The documents, dating from 2009, were written by the National Organization for Marriage and had been kept from the public until Monday, when they were unsealed by court officials in Maine.

They were part of a two-pronged legal challenge of Maine's financial disclosure laws. Still unresolved is whether the NOM will have to release the names of donors to its successful 2009 campaign to ban same-sex marriage in Maine.

The Human Rights Campaign, a major gay-rights organization, first circulated the documents Monday night, and its president, Joe Solmonese, assailed the strategies that they detailed.

"With the veil lifted, Americans everywhere can now see the ugly politics that the National Organization for Marriage traffics in every day," Solmonese said. "While loving gay and lesbian couples seek to make lifelong commitments, NOM plays racial politics, tries to hide donors and makes up lies about people of faith."

Through the Human Rights Campaign, veteran civil rights leader Julian Bond also condemned the NOM strategy.

"NOM's underhanded attempts to divide will not succeed if Black Americans remember their own history of discrimination," said the statement from Bond, a former chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "Pitting bigotry's victims against other victims is reprehensible; the defenders of justice must stand together."

NOM's president, Brian Brown, was unapologetic, issuing a brief statement hailing his organization's collaboration with other black and Hispanic leaders, including Bishop Harry Jackson, a Maryland church pastor, and New York state Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr.

"Gay marriage advocates have attempted to portray same-sex marriage as a civil right, but the voices of these and many other leaders have provided powerful witness that this claim is patently false," Brown said.

"Gay marriage is not a civil right, and we will continue to point this out in written materials such as those released in Maine," Brown added. "We proudly bring together people of different races, creeds and colors to fight for our most fundamental institution: marriage."

The NOM documents depicted Democratic Party leaders as "increasingly inclined to privilege the concerns of gay rights groups over the values of African-Americans."

"Find, equip, energize and connect African-American spokespeople for marriage; develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots," one memo said.

The memos stressed the pivotal political role of Latinos as a swing constituency.

"Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values?" one NOM memo asked. "We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity ... a symbol of resistance to inappropriate assimilation."

The NOM strategy also called for portraying President Barack Obama as a "social radical" and seeking to cast same-sex marriage in a negative light by linking it to other issues, such as pornography and sexualizing of children.

Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry, a national advocacy group supporting same-sex marriage, said the memos suggest the NOM "will stop at nothing to push its agenda, pitting American against American, minority against minority, family members against family members."

"These smoking-gun documents show how NOM has sought, in the most cynical ways imaginable, to bait the gay community in hopes of provoking a hurt response that would further divide," he said.

The NOM is playing an active role this year as battles over same-sex marriage unfold in several states.

In Maryland and Washington, the organization and its allies are gathering signatures to place measures on the Nov. 6 ballot that would overturn recently passed same-sex marriage laws.

In Maine, it will be seeking defeat of a measure already placed on the November ballot that would legalize same-sex marriage. In North Carolina and Minnesota, the NOM is supporting ballot measures that would amend the state constitutions to define marriage as only between a man and woman.

The unsealed court documents illustrated that the NOM sometimes falls short of its goals. The memos said a priority for 2010 was to repeal gay-marriage laws in New Hampshire, Iowa, and Washington, D.C. But same-sex marriage remains in effect in those three jurisdictions along with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and New York.

The memos contained extensive details about NOM's finances, but they do not identify individual donors, including three who had given more than $1 million apiece as of late 2009.

In Maine, the group leading the campaign to legalize same-sex marriage ? Mainers United for Marriage ? announced the appointment of Matt McTighe as campaign manager. He had been the state public education director for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, a Boston-based gay-rights law firm.

McTighe said he was reviewing the NOM documents Tuesday, but was troubled by what he saw on first take.

"We try to focus on telling the positive stories on why marriage matters to all committed loving couples in Maine, and here they are trying to use fear and scare tactics to turn people off," he said.
