LONDON -- The U.S. added to its Olympic diving medal count Monday as Nick McCrory and David Boudia won bronze in the men's 10-meter synchronized platform event. The Americans now are 2-for-2 in diving after Abby Johnston and Kelci Bryant earned a silver in 3-meter synchro springboard Sunday, ending a 12-year medal drought for the U.S.
And there are still strong medal hopes for Stanford divers Kristian Ipsen and Cassidy Krug, who both are competing later in the Games.
China extended its dominance with a gold medal victory by Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan in the platform synchro with a final score of 486.78 in the six-dive competition. German Sanchez and Ivan Garcia of Mexico had the highest degree of difficulty in the competition and it paid off with the silver as they scored 468.90.
Then came the American tandem of McCrory and Boudia with a score of 463.47.
Meanwhile, the host country was disappointed again when Brits Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield finished fourth. They were hoping to deliver the first gold medal of the Games for Great Britian.
The crowd, so raucous before the competition and through the early rounds, gasped when Daley and Waterfield missed on a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck. Both men were out of sync in opposite directions and resembled a V entering the water instead of being in vertical positions. Their mistake opened the door for the Chinese pair to capture gold.
The Chinese didn't have the same high
degree of difficulty as the Mexicans, and the Brits and Americans tossed in tougher dives than Yuan and Zhang. But they were solid, earning four perfect 10.0s for synchronization in the round.
