So, over the past 10 weeks you have had an overview of the new WHS Act and its implications in the workplace.
The major items are that under this Act and the accompanying Regulations, every person in the workplace is responsible for the safety in that workplace.
Every worker deserves to go home from work. No-one deserves to be injured, harassed, abused, overworked, permanently disabled or killed because of the work they perform or are impacted by.
The actions, the work practices, the culture and the compliance to workplace safety legislation, policies, guidelines and procedures is the responsibility of board members, senior, middle and junior management, all workers whether paid, unpaid, contracted, full-time, part time or casual.
From the highest paid to the lowest paid, no-body can escape their responsibility to perform their duties and to act at all times with the safety of themselves and everyone impacted by their work or actions taken into account.
It is the responsibility of everyone to adopt a culture of safety where all hazards are identified and acted on according to the level of risk involved.
Safety is not negotiable. Safety is not traded off for the sake of expediency or convenience. It is not a cost to the business, but rather an investment.
Workplace health and safety leads to increased productivity, lower costs from lower injury time loss, staff turnover and insurance premiums and increased profits. It makes the workplace one where people want to be. It is about leadership.
Your safety and the safety of those around you is in your hands.
Good health and keep safe out there.
