A team from the University of Michigan has won the 2012 American Solar Challenge, a long-distance stage race for solar-powered vehicles. The win marked the fourth victory in a row and the seventh overall for the university.
The group?s car, called the Quantum, finished ahead of cars from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in second place and Principia College in Elsah, Ill., which came in third. There were 18 teams in the competition.
The annual race, which began in 1990, covered 1,650 miles and took eight days to complete. The race began in Rochester, N.Y. and ended in St. Paul, Minn.
